Although the models you are going to find at your Ford Lightning dealer in NY this year will be an all-new EV pickup, the name actually dates back nearly 30 years. First unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show in 1992, the original F-150 Lightning was developed by Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) as part of a special project. The SVT was assembled within Ford as a new group that would develop passion projects that really demonstrated everything possible when pushing Ford engineering to the next level.
In 1993, two models went on sale after being developed by Ford’s SVT: the Mustang Cobra and the F-150 Lightning. The original F-150 Lightning was essentially a ninth-generation Ford F-150 that was fitted with various parts to boost its performance. It featured a sport-tuned engine to improve output, an upgraded transmission, and special 17-inch Firestone Firehawk tires. The first generation of the Ford F-150 Lightning went from 1993 to 1995, then went on hiatus until its next generation launched for the model year 1999. When it returned, it featured a supercharged V8 engine that delivered 360 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque, with a specially tuned automatic transmission and 18-inch Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. Over the years that followed, it was updated with mono-tube Bilstein shocks, additional horsepower and torque, and more high-performance features. The final model year for the F-150 Lightning was 2004, and fewer than 40,000 total models were made during its two generations. That was, of course, until now.
