We would never say that the Silverado 2500 HD is a bad truck; Chevy has clearly put a tremendous amount of work into making a powerful and impressive work truck. Unfortunately for them, Ford has simply taken things further and gives you a lot more to get the most from when tackling any job you need to do.
For starters, you have twice as many engines to choose from with the F-250 than you do with the Silverado 2500 HD, which makes it easier to get exactly what you need. Furthermore, you can get far more power with Ford’s truck than Chevy offers: the Power Stroke High Output turbo-diesel in the F-250 delivers 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque, whereas the diesel engine from Chevy tops out at 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque.
Not only do you get a lot more power from Ford than Chevy offers, but this results in greater capabilities too—sometimes dramatically so. When properly equipped, the Ford F-250 can handle 23,000 lbs of maximum towing capacity or 4,246 lbs of maximum payload.
By comparison, the Silverado 2500 HD has just over 22,000 lbs of max towing and 3,689 lbs of maximum payload; it falls short in both areas. Similarly, you get nicer standard features in the F-250 than Chevy offers, including a larger infotainment display and much more. The result is a truck built to get some major work done and keep going strong for as long as you need it to.

Performance
Although more is not always better, there are certainly some instances where having more options and choices can improve your experience when shopping for a truck. The Silverado 2500 HD has just two engines available, which is good but not great, although Chevy is wise enough to provide both a standard gas and diesel option. Standard is a 6.6L V8 gas engine that provides 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque, providing a good overall choice.
The available 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 engine kicks things up nicely with 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque, showcasing good overall capabilities. There is nothing wrong with either of these engines, but Chevy’s fans deserve more to take things even further.
Ford gives you four engines to choose from with the F-250, starting with a 6.8L V8 gas engine that provides 405 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. If you want a bit more performance, then a 7.3L V8 is available that delivers 430 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque, surpassing what Chevy offers with a gas engine.
There is a 6.7L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V8 engine available for the 2025 F-250 that delivers 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. You can see that this is already more powerful than the diesel engine for the Silverado 2500 HD; an available High Output version of this engine pushes performance up to an incredible 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. This leaves Chevy’s truck far behind and gives you more muscle to tackle any job.
Capabilities
Powerful engines are great for a number of reasons, including the way they can improve your time on the road each day. But in a vacuum, extra power does not always mean a better truck since there are a huge number of factors at play.
Fortunately, Ford understands this well, so they utilize all of the extra horsepower and torque you can get with their engines to deliver impressive capabilities too. After all, the value of a heavy-duty truck like the F-250 is in its robust payload and towing capacities that far surpass light-duty models.
In terms of towing, both of these trucks can handle quite a lot of work, although you can certainly tackle more with the F-250. Chevy gets an edge when it comes to their gas engine since it can handle up to 18,700 lbs of maximum towing, which is quite impressive.
The F-250 with its 7.3L V8 gas engine provides 17,200 lbs of towing capacity, which is a bit behind, but we will see that results in a greater payload rating. Both diesel engines from Ford go beyond what Chevy offers, however. The Silverado 2500 HD with its diesel tops out at 22,430 lbs of towing; the F-250 can handle 22,900 lbs of towing with its Power Stroke turbo-diesel, or 23,000 lbs if you go with the High Output version.
When it comes to how much weight you can load up on your truck, the F-250 wins out across the board and provides you with the perfect work truck. The 2025 Silverado 2500 HD with its gas engine offers 3,689 lbs of payload, while its diesel engine lowers that a bit to 3,615 lbs.
Going with the Ford F-250 and its standard gas engine, you get 4,240 lbs of maximum payload—the 7.3L V8 can handle 4,246 lbs of max payload. Even with its diesel engines that give you greater towing capabilities, the F-250 still has more than 3,900 lbs of maximum payload available. This gives you tremendous capability to handle any task you need, making it the perfect work truck.
Features
Although both of these trucks have a lot to offer beyond powerful engines and impressive capabilities, Ford gives you more to take advantage of. This is especially true when it comes to the standard features for these trucks; note that they both have numerous trim levels available.
Great standard features set you up for success with your truck, which can be very important if you want to assemble a fleet. Even if you only need one work truck, it is good to know how much you can get without choosing a higher trim level.
Starting with the 2025 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, it comes with a seven-inch infotainment display inside, with a two-speaker sound system in Regular Cab models. This is joined by a 3.5-inch monochromatic Driver Information Center in the standard six-gauge instrumentation cluster.
Some nice features are standard, like Remote Keyless Entry and Cruise Control, but the four-way manual seating leaves much to be desired. Higher trims can add a number of features, but this starting point feels a bit barebones these days.
By comparison, the 2025 Ford F-250 XL comes with a standard eight-inch SYNC 4 infotainment display that is larger and easier to use than Chevy’s standard screen. This is joined by a 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen (again, bigger than the starting display in the Silverado 2500 HD), a four-speaker sound system, and much more.
You get a 40/20/40 split bench seat up front, along with Cruise Control, audio controls on the steering wheel, and Ford Telematics and Data Services to help you get more work done with your truck.
