There's a mad rush in the automotive industry to deliver innovative EVs that meet the growing demands of drivers and have minimal impact on the environment. Automakers like Ford and Volkswagen are leading the race, ushering us into a modern era where electric power means jaw-dropping performance and remarkable capability. So, what does the race look like, especially when slating the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs 2022 Volkswagen ID.4? It's time to find out.

You might've started your search for the Volkswagen ID.4 because of its lower price tag of $41,230, but you might be surprised to find that the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E delivers even more value than its German counterpart. Starting at $43,895, the Mach-E lives up to the Mustang name with a more capable electric powertrain, better driving range, and a more extensive suite of cutting-edge technology. When you consider these features and the federal and state tax incentives for buying an EV, it's no surprise why the Mustang Mach-E is the clear winner.

But what else makes the Mach-E so unique? Taking a cue from its namesake, the Mach-E delivers the performance you expect from the Mustang, with a launch from 0 to 60 mph as fast as 3.5 seconds. This jaw-dropping capability doesn't come at the cost of efficiency, with trims like the California Route 1 offering a 314-mile range. At best, the Volkswagen ID.4 promises a 280-mile range, which means more time spent charging and less time in the driver's seat. And who wants that?

  • Power and Performance

    Basic Transportation

Volkswagen's ID.4 is solid on paper, but how does it compare to the competition? It turns out that the ID.4 leaves a lot to be desired when slated against heavy hitters like the Mustang Mach-E. After all, it's hard to beat the Mustang name.

Available in rear-wheel or rear-wheel drive, the ID.4 comes equipped with an 82 kWh battery and an electric motor located in the rear. Like most EVs, the ID.4 is nearly silent, which prompted Volkswagen to use synthetic sounds to alert pedestrians and cyclists to its presence on the road. But how does it perform? Its permanent-magnet motor delivers 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of instant torque. Opting for the ID.4 with all-wheel drive adds a second motor for the front axle, extending the ID. 4's capability to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque with a launch from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds.

    High-Speed Thrills

The ID.4's power is impressive until you compare it to the 2022 Mustang Mach-E. Like Volkswagen, Ford offers the Mach-E with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive but offers two different battery sizes to cater to a variety of driving and performance needs. The 70 kWh standard range battery produces 266 hp and either 317 or 428 lb-ft of instant torque, depending on whether you choose front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The available 91 kWh extended range battery takes the Mach-E to the next level, producing 290 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque on rear-wheel drive models and 346 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque on all-wheel drive models.

For real power, Ford answers the call with the Mach-E GT. Outfitted with all-wheel drive and an extended range battery, the upgraded motors in the GT churn out 480 hp and up to 634 lb-ft of instant torque. This pushes the Mustang Mach-E's launch from 0 to 60 mph to 3.5 seconds, making it nearly two seconds faster than the Volkswagen ID.4.

    Charging Options

One of the biggest concerns of getting behind the wheel of an EV like the Mach-E or the ID.4 is charging. How easy is it to adapt your garage to an electric car? Where will you charge your EV on the road? Fortunately, Volkswagen and Ford make charging your EV easy and convenient wherever you are.

The 2022 ID.4 offers a range between 245 and 280 miles, depending on the drivetrain. It comes with a Level 1 charging cord, which runs on a standard electric outlet and is the slowest at recharging the EV. Volkswagen partnered with Electrify Home and gives you the option to add a Level 2 home charger to your home that's Energy Star certified and WiFi capable, which means you can use a mobile app to monitor the ID.4's charging status at home and on the road. With a Level 2 charging station, your ID.4 can fully replenish its battery in 7.5 to 11.5 hours.

When you're on the road, you can look for DC fast charging stations across the Electrify America USA high-speed network. DC fast charging is the most efficient way to recharge the ID. 4's battery, adding up to 70 miles to the range in as little as 10 minutes. So, how does the Mustang Mach-E compare?

    Electrify Your Life

Like Volkswagen, Ford makes adopting an electric lifestyle straightforward and hassle-free. The 2022 Mustang Mach-E promises a driving range between 224 and 314 miles, which is about 34 miles over the ID. 4's rated range. While the ID.4 only comes with a Level 1 charger, the Mach-E comes with the Ford Mobile Charger that's compatible with a 120-volt or 240-volt outlet for faster charging capability.

When plugging into a 120-volt wall outlet with 12-amp service, the Ford Mobile Charger adds about three miles to the Mach-E's driving range every hour. Plugging the charger into a 240-volt outlet with a 32-amp service increases this speed to 20 miles per charging hour, which means the Mach-E can fully recharge in about 15 hours. For the ultimate charging experience, Ford offers a Connected Charge Station that is hardwired to a 240-volt outlet with 48-amp service to recharge the SUV in 10.9 hours. It is even Bluetooth and WiFi-compatible.

Like Volkswagen's smartphone app, you can use the FordPass app to monitor the Mach-E's charging and energy usage. The app also helps you find the most efficient route that has Level 2 and DC fast charging stations along the way. This takes the guesswork out of locating one of the thousands of stations within the BlueOval Charge Network.

  • Technology

    Cutting-Edge Features

With EVs signifying our progression into a future with zero emissions and zero crashes, it only makes sense that models like the ID.4 and Mach-E are outfitted with cutting-edge technology. This technology ranges from connectivity to driver-assist and safety features that keep you connected, informed, and aware when you're in the driver's seat. So, which model is the most tech-savvy?

    Infotainment

The ID.4 comes standard with a 10-inch Discover Pro touchscreen display angled toward the driver. Fully customizable, the display is home to Volkswagen's navigation system, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an array of in-vehicle apps and settings. It's also central to the ID.4's Hello ID voice control system, which allows you to use simple voice commands to make calls and even control the climate in the cabin.

Opting for top-tier trims like the ID.4 Pro S upgrades the display to a 12-inch Discover Pro Max infotainment system. You can also add a high-tech package that equips the SUV with wireless smartphone charging, SiriusXM radio, a WiFi hotspot, and access to Volkswagen Car-Net. With Car-Net, you have remote access to the ID.4 via an app on your smartphone, safety features like Emergency Assistance and Automatic Crash Notification, and Amazon Alexa.

You'll find many similar features come standard on the 2022 Mach-E, except the Mustang SUV comes standard with an expansive 15.5-inch touchscreen running Ford's latest SYNC 4A infotainment system. The cloud-based system keeps the Mach-E current with over-the-air software updates and adds enhanced voice recognition, built-in navigation, and Ford+Alexa capability. Beyond this, it also gives you the freedom to create the driving experience you want with three unique settings: Unbridled, Engage, or Whisper. These settings adjust the Mach-E's driving dynamics, interior sound, and interior lighting to deliver a bespoke and engaging experience when you're behind the wheel.

    Safety

Beyond entertainment and connectivity features, the ID.4 comes standard with IQ.Drive, a suite of advanced driver-assist technology. The suite equips the ID.4 with Travel Assist, which is Volkswagen's semi-automated driving system. It also adds Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Assist, Emergency Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control Stop and Go, and Rear Traffic Alert. Additionally, the ID.4 comes standard with Dynamic Road Sign Display, Light Assist, and Park Distance Control, all of which add convenience, provide assistance, and keep you informed.

Like the ID.4, the Mach-E makes your safety a priority by extending your visibility and increasing your awareness. These tools are centralized in the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite that outfits the SUV with a 360-degree camera with split-view capability. Along with a better view, you'll also find tools like Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Post-Collision Braking, Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane-Keeping System with Blind Spot Assist and Road Edge Detection, Reverse Brake Assist, and Auto High Beams. Perhaps the most important feature, however, is Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving technology. While Volkswagen's Travel assist can provide small steering inputs, BlueCruise allows you to go completely hands-free on highways across New York.
