There are cars, and then there are performance cars. Some nameplates are instantly recognizable, even to those who wouldn't consider themselves car enthusiasts, and for good reason. Today we are going to compare two of these iconic models: the 2022 Ford Mustang vs 2022 Chevy Camaro. Some of you may have gotten very excited when you read those names, as you should be; these are two of the finest cars in automotive history, and they continue to grow, develop, and increase their quality as the automotive industry progresses. Because these are both excellent performance vehicles, we want to take a closer look at what makes these vehicles ideal for racing. Whether you are a racer or are just intrigued by the idea, you know that not all cars are up to the task. But, both of these vehicles are, and we're going to see which one comes out on top. So buckle up and hang on tight because this is going to be a close race.
A race is nothing without speed; nobody would show up to a low-speed race. In order to achieve the necessary speed, though, you need the right source of power––you need the right engine. Seeing as Ford and Chevy are two of the foremost brands in the industry, you probably won't be surprised to hear that both the 2022 Ford Mustang and the 2022 Chevy Camaro offer several different engine options. The 2022 Mustang Shelby GT500 does not mess around, equipping itself with a 5.2-liter supercharged cross-plane crank V8 engine. That's a mouthful, but what it all boils down to is 760 horsepower and 625 pounds-feet of torque. Need we say more?
We need not, but we will. This engine, which uses Sequential Multiport Electronic Fuel Injection, works in tandem with Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. So, the 2022 Mustang is full of tongue-twisting features, but these tongue-twisters translate into radical performance capabilities because this dual-clutch transmission provides the perfect conditions for racing, with shift times coming in at less than one-tenth of a second. That is almost incalculably astonishing, and this fantastic transmission will have you hitting all your marks on the track.
The 2022 Camaro has some big shoes to fill. But can it fill them? That's the big question. Like the Mustang, the Camaro offers a number of different engine options, but its crowning jewel is the V8 in the ZL1. Chevy is known for shaking up the game with a V8 engine, and the Camaro follows suit with its available 6.2-liter LT4 supercharged V8 engine. This is a highly capable engine, with the ability to perform at 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. Now, let's pause for a second. Those are excellent performance specs. There is no denying that fact. However, the Mustang GT500 goes above and beyond excellence with over 100 more horsepower than the Camaro ZL1. 650 hp is not bad by any means––in fact, it is amazing! But 760 hp simply is objectively better, especially on the racetrack.
With the available 10-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, the Camaro ZL1 certainly handles well, but you're going to have a hard time competing with the tenth-of-a-second shift speeds found in the Mustang GT500. So, in terms of power and handling, the Mustang takes the cake. This isn't necessarily surprising, seeing as the Mustang is one of the most famous performance vehicles in history, and that status is earned.
Performance may be the most important component of a performance vehicle, but if the car doesn't have a racing look, it's hard to classify it as a racing vehicle. Part of our understanding of the category of racing vehicles comes from their distinct design features. So, in comparing the 2022 Ford Mustang and the 2022 Chevy Camaro, it is just as important to examine their design features as it is their performance features. Spoiler alert: they are both well-designed. But, it's not quite as simple as that, so let's take a closer look.
First impressions are important, and the first impression of a vehicle comes from its exterior. Designing the exterior of a vehicle is not simply about a nice color scheme (though both of these fine vehicles provide plenty of exciting color options) but is about giving drivers a preview of what occurs once the vehicle is turned on; the outside should indicate what's going on inside.
If ever a vehicle accomplished this, it's the 2022 Ford Mustang. Now, what's exciting about the Mustang is how versatile it is overall, and this is indicated through its wide array of design options. If you're looking for a fierce racing aesthetic, then choose the sleek fastback coupe for a rounded appearance overall. If you're more on the relaxed side of things and you're looking to enjoy the vehicle's premium capability more on the open road than the racetrack, then the convertible option may be right up your alley. Both the convertible and the traditional Mustang are excellent in appearance, but they communicate very different moods.
With the Mustang, the exterior communicates the magnitude of the vehicle's performance capabilities by way of sharply angled vehicle accents, which increases both the car's wow factor and its aerodynamics. Form is function for the Mustang, which is why its design features and performance capabilities go hand in hand. The GT Performance Package, which offers Ebony Black-painted aluminum wheels, looks fantastic and also helps the Mustang do what it does best on the track.
Likewise, the dual exhaust (and active valve performance exhaust) outlets look great on the Mustang, but they also help the car breathe better and thereby perform better. Plus, the active valve performance exhaust allows you to control the car's noise level. If you want to make your car heard on the track, you can let it roar, but if you're trying to keep it low-key on the road, then Quiet Start will have you leaving the house without a peep.
The 2022 Camaro certainly does not look too shabby either. Between its Shock and Steel Special Edition and its Redline Edition, you can turn this car into a colorful race or a subtle but highly-refined sports car. The Redline Edition will take you down the more refined route with a Jetblack interior and red seats. The black and red combination always helps increase the feeling of athletic ferocity, and Redline graphics help you remember just what you're driving. But, speaking of remembering what you're driving, there is yet another element to remember when comparing these two vehicles: the Mustang is a design feature all its own.
The Chevy bowtie is great, but that iconic horse at the center of the car's grille is an iconic design feature in itself, and its history has earned it the status of being synonymous with automotive excellence. In fact, the whole pony car segment is named for that horse, and the Camaro will always be number two. So, when it comes to design, the Mustang brings it home with iconic design features which continue to innovate with the vehicle.
If you're behind the wheel of a vehicle as excellent as either the 2022 Ford Mustang or the 2022 Chevy Camaro, you're going to want to test your vehicle by pushing it to its limit on the racetrack. As you should! But (and this is a significant "but"), if you're going to push your car to its limits, you will want to make sure that your vehicle has the sustainability to keep this up over time. These are both excellent vehicles, which means they are both relatively expensive vehicles, and you don't want to make an investment that big only to have the car be unusable two years later.
Now, both Ford and Chevy are known for their strong and long-lasting vehicles, so we can say with confidence that you should be in good shape with either one of these vehicles so long as you do your part to take care of it. But, one is more sustainable than the other, so let's take a look at where they stand.
Sustainability and efficiency go hand-in-hand, and one of the first questions that come up with efficiency is that of fuel efficiency. This is an important component as it pertains both to the vehicle's long-term health and to the long-term health of your wallet since you'll be the one paying for the gas. Well, the Ford Mustang is off to a good start with its standard 2.3L EcoBoost engine. With this engine, the 2022 Mustang sees an EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 21 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway. The 2022 Camaro, with its less powerful 2.0L turbo, comes in at 25 MPG in the city and 30 MPG in the city.
Those numbers may appear to be a negligible difference in merely reading them, but consider the cumulative difference that will make over a few gallons of gas, a few tanks of gas, and a few years of driving, refilling, and more driving. It adds up! So, the 2022 Mustang wins the fuel-efficiency portion while giving you a sportier ride to boot.
Of course, sustainability does not end with fuel efficiency; ultimately, sustainability is about the vehicle driving in a fashion that is healthy and repeatable over the course of many years. Both of these cars are well-suited to such sustainability, but the Ford Mustang, with its higher levels of efficiency and its dynamic driving flexibility, puts itself in a uniquely good position to offer such sustainability.
