Full-size pickup trucks are highly competitive, with this segment boasting some of the tensest rivalries known to the automotive industry. Perhaps no two models are bigger rivals than the Ford F-150 and the Ram 1500. It appears there is always a staunch rivalry going on, with each automaker firing back, year after year, with excellent features meant to best the other. These two hot releases for the 2024 model year are formidable contenders in the full-size pickup truck segment, stacking up features and putting forth powerful performances. But which one is most worthy of your hard-earned cash? Here is everything you need to know about the 2024 Ford F-150 vs 2024 Ram 1500.

  • Power

    Engine Performance and Efficiency

As any pickup truck owner knows, the real heart and soul of the vehicle lies beneath its hood. The 2024 Ford F-150 and 2024 Ram 1500 both offer strong gas-powered powertrain options. On the F-150, you get a long list of engines:

    • 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque)
    • 5.0L V8 (400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque)
    • 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (400 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque)
    • 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid (430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque)
    • 3.5L High-Output EcoBoost V6 (450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque)
    • 5.2L Supercharged V8 (700 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque)

The two most powerful options on the list––the 3.5L High-Output EcoBoost and 5.2L Supercharged V8––are reserved for the off-road Raptor and Raptor R supertrucks. However, the rest of the engines are available across the F-150 trim lineup. This lends a great deal of versatility to the lineup, allowing buyers to craft the configuration that best meets their needs.

You can even choose to go all-electric if you’d like since Ford also offers an all-electric version called the F-150 Lightning, which lets you choose between a standard 98 kWh battery pack with dual electric motors (452 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque) and an extended range 131 kWh battery pack (580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque).

The Ram 1500 Can't Quite Keep Up

The Ram 1500 also offers a series of potent powertrains. However, you do not get nearly as many choices as you do for the F-150. The 2024 Ram 1500’s engine list looks like this:

    • 3.6L V6 with eTorque (305 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque)
    • 5.7L V8 with eTorque (395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque)
    • 6.2L Supercharged V8 (702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque)

There is no longer a 3.0L EcoDiesel engine option, as that was discontinued last year. Also, there are currently no all-electric variants of the Ram models. While Ram promises to deliver electrified versions of the Ram 1500 in the future, those looking to buy an all-electric pickup truck right now will find that Ram does not yet deliver on that front.

Both trucks push the limits for what this segment can do in terms of towing and payload capacities, but there is one model that clearly has the edge: the Ford F-150. The 2024 Ram 1500 can pull up to 12,750 lbs with its 5.7 V8 engine. However, when it comes to light-duty pickup trucks, no one bests the Ford F-150. With its 3.5L EcoBoost engine, this truck can tow up to 13,500 lbs. Max payload capacity also surpasses the competition, topping out at 2,455 lbs.

  • Infotainment

    Technological Titans

The automotive world is always changing to meet the evolving demands of drivers, adding more high-tech gadgets as time goes on. Ford and Ram love to showcase their technological achievements on their pickups every model year, so there is a lot of competition in this particular arena. It is all about making life behind the wheel a lot more engaging, keeping drivers entertained and informed as they go about their daily––and very connected––lives. But who does it best, going above and beyond? Ford or Ram?

Ford knocks it out of the park for 2024 with the SYNC 4 infotainment system. This widely loved and user-friendly system has a standard 12-inch touchscreen display and allows for uninterrupted smartphone app integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can easily find points of interest on the navigation system and get where you need to go without any hassle. There are also plenty of advanced driver aids––including adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist––which help keep you safe while you are on the go.

    SYNC 4 vs Uconnect 5

Ram has stepped its game up in recent years as well. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system is more refined than before, with sharp graphics and a good number of features. However, the 2024 Ram 1500 still comes standard with a tiny five-inch display, and some trims top out with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, putting it at a clear disadvantage compared to the F-150. What’s more, you do not even get standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration until you go up to the Laramie trim level, which means you have to spend more to get the essential features that Ford gives you for free.

Driver assistance features like Advanced Brake Assist and Lane Keep Assist also do not come standard on the base 2024 Ram 1500 Tradesman. You can get some bundled into packages if you are willing to upgrade, but this will jack up the price of your truck, so that might turn you off if you are looking for the ultimate value when it comes to driver assistance features. Meanwhile, the 2024 F-150 comes standard with the full Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0 suite to help keep you safe on the road.

  • Design

    Where Style Meets Functionality

Design is not centered purely on aesthetics when it comes to pickup trucks; rather, it is about strength, grit, and athleticism. Balancing these elements is something both the 2024 Ford F-150 and the 2024 Ram 1500 do well, providing designs that serve a purpose while catching eyes and turning heads out on the open road. Both are indeed alluring, but the F-150 goes a step beyond when it comes to creating a stunning exterior aesthetic.

A staple of the F-150’s design is its aluminum alloy body. This material boosts fuel efficiency, not to mention the truck’s overall performance, because of its lighter weight. Yet it remains strong and durable, reflecting the F-150’s interior ruggedness and focus on ergonomic comfort. The cabin maximizes space while creating a higher degree of luxury with premium materials and enough soft-touch surfaces in just the right spots. Stylish at any point on the trim level ladder, you will find that the 2024 F-150 offers an intuitive cabin layout full of large knobs and controls up front and a wide array of adjustments for the driver, resulting in optimized comfort.

Ram is also known for its keen attention to interior detail. You will find everything from dual-zone automatic climate control to heated and ventilated front and rear seats. However, there are some traits that might not be all that appealing. For instance, it lacks features to compete with Ford's onboard generator and hands-free driving technology. You will also end up paying more for a few extra creature comforts than you would on the F-150, so the value might not be quite as abundant.
