Buying a Used Ford Edge? Here Are Our Favorite Model Years

Hunting for a great deal on a pre-owned Ford Edge? Naturally, the best place to start is right here at DePaula Ford, your used Ford Edge dealer, but we know some buyers like to do their research. That’s why we’ve put together everything you need to know about the best model years for this popular SUV. Whether you want a value-oriented base model or a performance-oriented Edge ST, there are some great deals to be had.
Full disclosure––we’re a little biased. We think every model year of the Edge represents a great value for used SUV buyers. Still, there are a few standout years that hit the sweet spot of combining great design cycle timing with newly added features. The Edge has always been considered more of a performance SUV, yet its understated curb profile skips the trendy slopes and angles, focusing instead on optimal dimensions, both inside and out.
Is it better to buy the first model of a new generation or the outgoing model of one that’s ending? Ask ten people, and you’ll get ten different answers, but ask us specifically about the Edge, and we’ll give you the details on exactly which model years to focus on. Whatever you decide, you’ll be glad to know that the Edge is nearly as good used as it is new.
The 2014 Ford Edge
The original Ford Edge was launched in 2007 as a midsize SUV slotted between the compact Escape and the full-size Explorer. From the start, the Edge earned high marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including a 5-Star front driver crash rating. The 2007 Edge was also named one of the “Best Cars for Families” by AAA and earned several other accolades from trusted reviewers.
For 2014, the last year of the first generation, J.D. Power ranked the Edge #2 in midsize SUVs, specifically noting its great quality and reliability. The Edge was offered with either a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged engine or a more powerful 3.5-liter V6, and buyers could also choose from two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The performance-focused Edge Sport received an exclusive 3.7-liter V6 that delivered 305 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque.
Don’t let the smaller size of the EcoBoost engine fool you, though, because it’s plenty powerful. The 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder EcoBoost power plant pumps out 240 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, making it no slouch in the performance department, yet it still provides class-leading fuel economy. The fuel economy for this engine comes in at 21 MPG city and 30 MPG highway. Even the larger 3.5-liter V6 is fuel-efficient, at 19 MPG city and 27 MPG highway.
Within the traditional Ford Edge lineup, buyers were offered three trims: the SE, the SEL, and the Limited. Our pick is the upgraded Edge Limited. Used buyers will love its standard leather seating, backup camera, and interior ambient lighting. Some models also include navigation and a panoramic sunroof. Also, 2014 marks the year the Ford Edge began receiving advanced infotainment and connected technology, so it’s a great choice for commuters who love streaming playlists and podcasts.

The 2017 Ford Edge
What’s not to love about the 2017 Ford Edge? Regardless of the trim you choose, you’ll get a large 5-passenger SUV with tons of extra space for all your gear. 2017 Edge trims include the SE, the SEL, the Titanium, and the Sport. Similar to the 2014 model year, the 2017 Edge is available with three different engines, including a fuel-efficient four-cylinder and the same 3.5-liter V6 that’s found in earlier model year versions. However, the old 3.7-liter V6 for the high-performance Sport trim was replaced by an even more powerful twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6.
It’s for this reason that we recommend the 2017 Ford Edge Sport. Who wouldn’t want 315 horsepower, 350 lb-ft of torque, and standard all-wheel drive at their disposal to make everything from road trips to Saturday afternoon errands just a little more exciting? The Sport features perforated leather seating, a heated steering wheel, and available ventilated seats, navigation, and adaptive cruise control. It’s a great combination of luxury and high performance.
The 2017 Edge is loaded with standard and available driver-assist safety and convenience systems, including rain-sensing wipers, an enhanced park assist system, and a handy remote start capability. Safety systems include Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitor, and Cross-Traffic Alert. The 2017 Edge also features available Adaptive Steering, a system that automatically adjusts steering with speed changes for optimal control.
Choosing a used Edge from the 2017 model year means you’ll also get a touchscreen with SYNC3 smartphone connectivity. SYNC3 is the third version of Ford’s infotainment operating system. It’s characterized by crisp graphics and intuitive user interfaces for drivers to perform a variety of tasks, including controlling cabin climate, interacting with smartphone apps, and plugging directions into the navigation system.
The 2019 Ford Edge
The best features of the 2019 Edge are found on the Titanium trim. Slated at the top of the lineup and available in either two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the Edge Titanium is where luxury meets utility. It features LED headlights and taillights, 19-inch aluminum wheels, and a hands-free, foot-activated liftgate on the exterior, along with heated power outside mirrors with a handy memory function.
Inside, the Edge Titanium embodies luxury, with its metal trim accents, ambient lighting, and leather-trimmed seating surfaces. The driver and front passenger seats are 10-way power-adjustable, and the steering wheel includes a power tilt/telescoping function with memory. All your passengers will love the Edge Titanium’s standard 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system.
Adding the available Titanium Elite Package outfits the Edge with 20-inch aluminum wheels, as well as body-color bumpers and side cladding that distinguish it from other trims. Other optional equipment includes adaptive cruise control with stop and go and lane centering, ventilated front seats, and a front 180-degree camera with split-view. A panoramic sunroof is also among the list of optional features.

Choose a Used Ford Edge
The Edge exemplifies the quality most midsize SUV buyers find desirable: versatility. Finding a used version in the price range you want is easy, thanks to the straightforward trim lineup that begins with a very affordable base model and culminates in the upscale Titanium. Add to that a high-performance trim, and the Edge can morph into just about anything you want.
Once you’ve made the excellent decision to purchase a used Ford Edge, all that’s left is deciding which model year and trim works best for your budget and lifestyle. Though we’ve only covered a few model years here, the Edge represents a unique opportunity for buyers. Its larger midsize profile means more interior and cargo space, and consistently high safety and reliability ratings mean you can’t go wrong with any model year.
The Edge is a versatile midsize SUV designed for mass appeal. That means you’ll have no trouble finding a model that fits your needs, whether you’re on a tight budget or you feel the need for speed. Lucky buyers might even find a Certified Pre-Owned Edge sitting on our lot, but the timing has to be just right because these popular SUVs are highly sought after. It’s reassuring to know that one of Ford’s first crossovers, the Edge, continues to anchor the lineup as a smart choice for discerning buyers. With over 1.8 million units sold since its debut, you’re sure to find the perfect used Edge at our dealership.
