There are several Super Duty options available, starting with the F-250, which positions it just about the F-150 in the Ford lineup. This is a terrific choice if you need greater capability than the F-150 can handle, but you’re not looking to invest in something like the F-350.

While a brand-new Ford F-250 is a beautiful thing, it can also be outside the budget for some shoppers, particularly if you’re growing your business and you need to make every dollar count. The 1998 Ford F-250

This is where it all began: the 1998 Ford F-250 was the first model year for this truck, though Ford had been making heavy-duty pickups for plenty of decades prior to this point. With the 1998 model, however, Ford officially launched the modern Super Duty lineup, so it’s a great starting point when looking at this truck. Prior to that, there were plenty of heavy-duty options available, including F-250 models—the F-250 name was first used starting with the 1953 model year when the previously-available F-2 and F-3 were combined into a single three-quarter-ton pickup in Ford’s lineup.

You’re probably not going to find a lot of 1998 F-250 models for sale these days, especially if you’re looking at dealerships. Still, it’s worth starting at the start. The 1998 F-250 launched with numerous configuration options, including a two-door Standard Cab and four-door Crew Cab. Two-wheel drive was standard, with four-wheel drive available, something you still see today, and numerous engines were offered, including a V8 and PowerStroke diesel.

The 2005 Ford F-250

With the 2005 Ford F-250, we’re still in the first generation for this truck, but it received a facelift that included big updates for both the interior and exterior. On the outside, this refresh included new headlights, a new front bumper and grille, and a better tailgate in the rear. Inside, dashboard auxiliary switches became available, along with better integration of Ford’s trailer brake control system for towing. The engines were also updated for better overall performance. To handle this increase in power, the F-250 received four-wheel disc brakes and larger wheels became standard to make room for them. If you’re looking at older F-250 models, then one from this year and later is a great place to start for the improved engine power, if nothing else.

The 2008 Ford F-250

For the 2008 model year, Ford launched an all-new second generation of the F-250 marked by new engine options and a noticeable redesign. In terms of power, the new 6.4L PowerStroke diesel V8 engine is particularly noteworthy as it delivers 350 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, which is still impressive more than a decade later. The interior received a full overhaul, including a new instrument cluster, a new steering wheel, updated door panels, and an improved audio system. If that’s particularly important to you, then you should look for a 2009 or later model—that’s when the Ford SYNC system became available. This is about as far back as we’d go when looking for used models, but newer ones are likely to treat you better.

The 2011 Ford F-250

There wasn’t a mid-generation update for the previous F-250, so the 2011 model year kicked off the third generation for this Super Duty pickup. This is a great place to start when you’re looking at used models, particularly if you’re trying to keep your costs low, as it received major upgrades inside and out. The front end was completely redesigned and restyled with a bold look that perfectly represents how powerful this truck is, and the steel frame was improved to be incredibly strong. Much like the second generation, there was no update for this model, though some minor improvements were made in the years that followed its launch.

The 2017 Ford F-250

For the 2017 model year, Ford released its fourth-generation F-250, and this is an amazing model to focus on when looking at used options. With a frame made using 95% high-strength steel and an aluminum alloy body, this fourth-generation model is light yet incredibly strong. All of this muscle allows for excellent payload and towing capacities, making these trucks fantastic choices if you need to get some serious work done. Engines for the 2017 model remain the same as the previous year, though they are tuned for increased power and performance, particularly in terms of greater torque.

Ford offers numerous trims for the 2017 model, including an XL, XLT, King Ranch, and Platinum, giving you fantastic features inside and out. Carrying on the tradition from its original model year, the fourth-generation F-250 has a two-door Regular Cab, four-door Super Cab, and a spacious Crew Cab available, plus two different bed lengths on offer and both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models available. This gives you a lot of different options as you’re looking at used F-250s, in addition to great comfort features and innovative technology introduced during this generation.

The 2020 Ford F-250

If you’re interested in some of the latest features for the F-250 but you want to balance them with sticking to a budget, then 2020 models are great ones to look for. The fourth generation received a mid-cycle update for the 2020 model year, including a revised front grille and tailgate, plus new features and options inside and out. One thing that really sets this model year apart from the ones that came before it is a new engine option: a 7.3L gas engine that delivers 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque for incredible power and capability.

The available 6.7L PowerStroke diesel engine has also been improved for this refresh, with performance boosted up to 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. Both of these engines are paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission, which makes driving this F-250 incredibly responsive, even when hauling a lot of weight behind you. These models can have some of the latest features, including standard Trailer Sway Control and an available Trailer Tow Camera System with Pro Trailer Backup Assist that makes it easy to hook up to a trailer and hit the road.
