In the 90s, there were only a select few SUVs to choose from, unlike today which has us seeing SUVs of all shapes and sizes from every automaker in the industry. Back in the day, though, SUVs were tough, ready for anything, and eager to please, and among some of the originals was the Ford Expedition. This full-size SUV made its debut in 1997, and since then, it has gone on to become one of the most popular family travelers, fearless adventurers, and daily drivers in the business. A few years after the Expedition first took to the streets, the large and stylish Nissan Armada had its turn. In 2003, this accommodating hauler was introduced, and drivers were in awe of its sculpted design, spacious interior, and impressive features. So, where does that leave these two power players now?

When it comes to the 2024 Ford Expedition vs 2024 Nissan Armada, these two full-size transporters are still collecting fans wherever they go. New for their latest year on the streets, the Expedition showcases additional towing aids and new colors added to its exterior palette, while the Nissan Armada sees changes to its trim lineup. Here at DePaula Ford, we want to help you find the exact match to suit your needs on the road, and anywhere else you happen to be traveling. In the areas of performance, comfort and convenience, and tech and safety, you’ll find that there’s a clear overachiever in the bunch that’s designed to satisfy your every need behind the wheel.

  • Performance

    Expedition Performance Expectations

Many families are drawn to full-size SUVs, especially when they need room for all of their passengers and everything else that’s joining them on the ride. They’re also looking for vehicles that can perform to their standards, and when you have your sights set on the 2024 Ford Expedition, you can’t help but be impressed. Two powertrains are available in its arsenal to help you create the ride you truly desire. It comes standard with a 3.5L EcoBoost turbocharged V6, which makes up to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. For more excitement, upgrade to the available 3.5L EcoBoost High Output turbocharged V6 and enjoy 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque driving you forward.

Both engine options are paired with a ten-speed SelectShift transmission, which allows you to harness unbeatable performance anywhere you’re heading. The Expedition is strong—there’s no doubt about that—and when it comes to towing, it impresses in this area as well, able to tow a maximum of 9,300 lbs without issue. Now, you may think that since this Ford favorite is so powerful, it’s not capable of being fuel efficient, but this would be an incorrect assumption. Families know that they have their work cut out for them once the kids get older and need to be shuttled to all their destinations, and the Expedition doesn’t disappoint, able to get an EPA-estimated 23 MPG on the highway.

    Armada Performance Expectations

Like the Expedition, the Armada is strong, but it definitely limits you when it comes to powertrain selection. For starters, there isn’t a selection at all. You have one engine to choose from and that’s a 5.6L V8, which presses forward with 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. This standard engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission, making for a dynamic and engaging ride; however, all of that power comes at a price.

The Armada isn’t as fuel efficient, able to get an EPA-estimated 19 MPG on the highway, which can be a disappointment for busy families dropping their kids off at after-school activities, sports practice, orthodontist appointments, and everything else on their agendas for the week. It also can’t tow as much as the Expedition, with a maximum towing capacity of 8,500 lbs. This limits your pulling potential, especially if you’re an active family looking to haul your boat or camper out to the lake or woods for the weekend.

  • Comfort

    Cabin Experience

Those searching for a full-size SUV are typically drawn to all the space that lies inside, which is exactly what you’ll find in the 2024 Ford Expedition and 2024 Nissan Armada. The Expedition offers an outstanding array of trims to choose from, ranging from practical and affordable travelers to lavish luxury cruisers and everything in between, so finding what you like is easy with this Ford SUV. You’ll find that comfort reigns supreme as well, with access to features like leather-trimmed seating surfaces, intricate stitching, massaging front seats, and a Panoramic Vista Roof to provide you with an open driving experience. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, distinctive badging, and more alluring elements can be found as you make your way through the trims, allowing you to create the experience you desire on board your everyday family traveler.

Despite its rugged outward appearance, the interior of the Armada is exceptionally luxurious. You’ll find features like quilted leather-appointed seating, captain’s chairs, ventilated seats, and more creature comforts as you climb the trim levels. Speaking of trims, you’ll only find three available in the Armada’s selection, compared to the Expedition’s ten, so if you want more choices when it comes to the look and feel of your vehicle, the Expedition will offer this to you.

    Seating and Cargo

Although both the Expedition and Armada offer three rows of seating, the Armada’s third row is reported to be especially tight, which means that adult passengers may not feel too comfortable being stuck in the back. Thankfully, all three rows in the Expedition provide occupants with plenty of legroom to relax and enjoy the ride. With available third-row power-reclining seats and available second-row tip-and-slide seats, creating even more legroom on board is effortless for this Ford superstar. For those who need even more space, opting for the Expedition MAX will deliver, offering you almost a foot of extra length to enhance its space even more.

When it comes to cargo, these full-size favorites don’t disappoint. Although both the Expedition and Armada offer an abundance of cargo space, they’re far from equal. The Expedition, for example, offers up to 104.6 cu.ft. in its standard models and 121.5 cu.ft. in the MAX versions, and with an available Cargo Management System, maintaining impeccable organization on board is easy with the Expedition in charge of your journey. The Armada is large, but it’s not as accommodating as the Expedition, topping out at 92.6 cu.ft. in its cargo hold. Although it doesn’t offer as much cargo volume as the Expedition, it still has some clever storage solutions to remain organized, including under-floor cargo storage and a second-row center console. In the end, if space is a concern, you’ll find more of it in the Expedition.

  • Technology

    Connected Innovation

When you prioritize tech, there’s much to be excited about in the 2024 Ford Expedition, which features a 15.5-inch LCD touchscreen, a 12.4-inch driver information panel behind the steering wheel, and more available features to maximize your ride in every way imaginable. Through the intuitive SYNC 4 system, you’ll have access to wireless smartphone integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and more, allowing you to feel ultimately connected to your day from the road. Over-the-air updates help you stay in tune with the latest advancements in the SYNC software without having to bring your car into the service center for updates. Plus, with an available 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system, you’ll be able to play your favorite tunes and podcasts with crystal clarity.

You’ll find that the Armada isn’t quite on the same playing field as the Expedition, especially when it comes to its touchscreen selection. It comes standard with a 12.3-inch display across the board with no option to upgrade as you move up the trim levels, which can be a bit of a disappointment for some drivers. On the plus side, it does include smartphone capabilities, navigation, wireless charging, and other available tech to make the drive better, but it may not be enough to compete with the Expedition and its arsenal of exceptional tech.

    Safety and Assistance

Like every new vehicle on the road these days, both the Expedition and Armada are loaded with advanced safety tech through Ford Co-Pilot360 and Nissan Safety Shield 360. These suites offer features like lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and more helpful elements as you travel, but where the Expedition really sets itself apart from the rest is with its assistance tech. For one, it can be armed with available BlueCruise hands-free driving capabilities, which allows you to operate your vehicle hands-free on 97% of controlled access highways across the US and Canada. BlueCruise has been named the top active driving assistance system in the industry, making it easy to sit back and truly take in the sights as you make your way to your destinations. You’ll also find a 360-degree camera system to help you with challenging tasks, like parking and maneuvering through hectic traffic on the interstate.

Unfortunately, you won’t find hands-free driving features in the Armada, which can be a deal-breaker for many drivers, especially those who prioritize tech. It does offer helpful features, like Intelligent Cruise Control, which helps you maintain your speed along with the flow of traffic, and an Intelligent Around View Monitor, which provides you with a bird’s-eye view around your vehicle. However, if you’re looking for more next-level tech, like hands-free driving capabilities, the Expedition is the better pick here.
