For a lot of people, a small SUV is just fine and provides the perfect vehicle for getting around each day and enjoying their time on the road. If you have a big family or need a lot of space inside your vehicle for the stuff you want to bring, you need a large or full-size SUV to help you take care of everything you require. There are not as many large SUVs available these days as you might expect, since compact and midsize models have become so popular, but Ford still has you covered with great options. Figuring out whether something like the Ford Expedition is right for you is not always easy, however, which is why it helps to consider numerous options and pick the one that is perfect for you.

Looking at the 2024 Ford Expedition vs 2024 Chevy Tahoe, for example, we can see that while the Chevy SUV has a lot to offer, Ford gives you more to enjoy with the Expedition. For starters, you get far greater performance with the standard engine in the Expedition, plus you can get much more power under the hood from Ford’s full-size SUV. The standard powertrain in the Expedition is a turbocharged V6 that delivers 380 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque; while the Chevy Tahoe’s starting engine provides 355 hp and just 383 lb-ft of torque. This provides you with an exceptional driving experience when you get into the Ford Expedition, plus it offers up to 9,300 lbs of towing capacity while the Tahoe tops out at just 8,400 lbs.

Since these are both full-size SUVs, you expect them to be quite large, and they live up to that reputation, so make sure you have room in your life for such a big vehicle. That said, there are some notable differences in how much room you get inside these two SUVs, particularly in terms of the rear cargo space. The Chevy Tahoe offers about 25 cu.ft. of rear cargo space while the Ford Expedition Max has 36 cu.ft. of rear cargo volume for you to take advantage of; that is a massive difference, and it can make bringing everything you need with you a lot easier. Plus, the Ford Expedition has superior features inside including a standard 12-inch infotainment display, whereas the Tahoe is stuck with an eight-inch screen for its starting Infotainment system.

  • Performance

One of the keys to a terrific large vehicle is a powerful engine that ensures driving it feels responsive and enjoyable. This is something Ford understands better than just about anyone, and all it takes is a look at something like the legendary F-150 pickup to realize that. Fortunately, Ford does not reserve its powerful engines only for its trucks; Ford’s SUVs have impressive performance and power, which is clearly indicated by the engineering of their trucks. Although Chevy certainly knows how to make an impressive engine, too, the Tahoe simply cannot keep up with the kind of power the Ford Expedition brings to the road.

    Tahoe Engine Options

Looking at the 2024 Chevy Tahoe, it has three different engines available, which is one more than the Ford Expedition but that does not help it much. The standard engine for the Tahoe is a 5.3L V8 that offers 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque—we will see how far this lags behind Ford’s standard engine. A better option is the available 6.2L V8 that delivers up to 433 hp and 467 lb-ft of torque, depending on the options chosen. One thing we will give Chevy credit for is an available diesel engine with 460 lb-ft of torque but just 277 hp. We like seeing a diesel for the Tahoe, but that is a very niche option that few drivers will choose, and its performance is lacking.

    The Expedition's Powerful Engine Options

Ford delivers remarkable performance across the Expedition lineup, giving you two engines to choose from, though there are three different levels of performance. The standard engine for the 2024 Expedition is a 3.5L EcoBoost turbocharged V6 that provides 380 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque; you can see this is far better than the standard performance from the Tahoe. Certain models feature this same engine tuned to offer 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque instead, which is a great way to go for enhanced performance. If you want exceptional power from the Expedition, then there is an available High-Output version of this engine that delivers 440 hp and an incredible 510 lb-ft of torque, far surpassing anything Chevy offers for the Tahoe. With such a large SUV, getting all of this power is exactly what you want when you hit the road each day.

  • Cargo Volume and Towing

Both the 2024 Ford Expedition and Chevy Tahoe are large, full-size SUVs with three rows of seating inside so that you can bring a lot of people along with you. That said, there are still some significant differences between them and the amount of stuff you can load up with before you hit the road. We particularly like the fact that Ford offers two versions of the Expedition, including the Max models, which gives you more options and the freedom to get exactly what you are looking for. The Tahoe has just one size available and anyone wanting something larger from Chevy has to go up to the Suburban and pay a lot more for a bigger SUV.

The Expedition Max Offers More Available Cargo Space

Since these are both three-row SUVs, we need to look at how much space is available across different parts of their interiors. The Chevy Tahoe has about 25 cu.ft. of rear cargo volume available, with about 72 cu.ft. of cargo volume behind the second row and nearly 123 cu.ft. of total cargo space behind the front seats. By comparison, the standard Ford Expedition has almost 21 cu.ft. of rear cargo space, about 63 cu.ft. of cargo volume behind its second row, and around 104 cu.ft. of total cargo volume. You can see this is a bit smaller across the board, but moving up to the Expedition Max gets you more than 121 cu.ft. of total cargo space, much closer to the Tahoe. Plus, the Expedition Max shines with almost 80 cu.ft. of cargo volume behind the second row and 36 cu.ft. of rear cargo space, giving you much more than the Chevy Tahoe.

    Towing Capabilities

One of the defining characteristics of an impressive full-size SUV is that it offers a lot of towing potential, so you can bring even more stuff with you. Looking at the 2024 Chevy Tahoe, it has up to 8,400 lbs of maximum towing capacity, though its diesel engine tops out at just 8,200 lbs instead. With the Ford Expedition, when properly equipped you get 9,300 lbs of towing capability, giving you tremendous performance for anything you need. That is a significant difference and highlights how well Ford understands how to make bold, powerful vehicles.

  • Technology

    Tahoe Tech

Considering how much time you likely spend in your vehicle, you want to choose something that will enhance your drive each day—that often comes down to the tech and convenience features that you get. Looking at the 2024 Chevy Tahoe, its standard features include an 8-inch Infotainment display paired with a 4.2-inch Driver Information Center screen. The Tahoe also comes with a six-speaker sound system, keyless open, remote start, and cruise control. For its pinnacle High Country trim, Chevy gives the Tahoe a better 10.2-inch infotainment screen, a 12-inch Driver Information Center display, and a 10-speaker Bose sound system.

    Impressive Expedition Tech Features

Standard features inside the 2024 Ford Expedition take things to the next level thanks to a 12-inch infotainment Center Stack Screen that is paired with an eight-inch Productivity Screen for you as the driver. You get dual-zone automatic temperature control, a six-speaker sound system, push-button start, and cruise control all standard. Going with the Expedition Platinum, however, gets you a stunning 15.5-inch infotainment display, a 12.4-inch screen in the gauge cluster, and an incredible 22-speaker B&O Unleashed sound system. All of these features come together to elevate your time on the road and create something truly special.
