That is when a powerful, heavy-duty truck is vital—choosing the right one becomes a bit easier if you focus on just one or two models or series at a time. Let's have a look at the 2024 Ford Super Duty vs 2024 Chevy Silverado HD trucks to see how they all compare to each other.
In general, while the Chevy Silverado HD Series trucks are pretty powerful, the Ford Super Duty trucks come out on top across the board. Not only does Ford give you more engines to choose from—four on the Super Duty F-250 and F-350 models—but they also deliver greater power and performance. Consider the most powerful conventional gas engines on each of these models: Chevy offers a 6.6L V8 with 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque, while Ford delivers a 7.3L Godzilla V8 engine that roars to life with 430 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque. And if you are interested in a diesel engine, you will quickly find the situation is much the same. Chevy has a 6.6L Turbo Diesel with 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque, while Ford gives you access to an incredible High-Output Turbo Diesel that delivers 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.
Not only does Ford give you more power, but the Super Duty trucks have been designed and engineered for greater capability too. In terms of payload, the Chevy Silverado 3500 HD tops out at 7,234 lbs, while the Ford F-350 Super Duty can handle up to 8,000 lbs of weight loaded onto it. This is true with towing, too, particularly when looking at the fifth wheel or gooseneck towing: Chevy tops out at 36,000 lbs of maximum towing, while you can get a Ford Super Duty with 40,000 lbs of maximum fifth wheel towing. Add in the fact that Ford gives you amazing tech features like built-in Onboard Scales and the Pro Power Onboard system that lets you power a wide range of devices and equipment, and it is clear that the Super Duty trucks cannot be beat.
When considering any truck, you always want to take a good look at the engine since so much of your driving experience comes down to the power it delivers. This is even truer when you are talking about a powerful heavy-duty truck like the Ford Super Duty and Silverado HD models since you expect them to be able to get even more work done. Both the Chevy and Ford trucks let you choose between conventional gas and diesel engines, so you can get the kind of power you want, but Ford gives you many more options and greater power and performance.
Looking at the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD trucks, there are two engines available, which allows for either gas or diesel, but not much more freedom. The standard engine on the Silverado HD models is a 6.6L V8 that offers 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque, which is an impressive starting point, but there is nothing else available for a gas engine. From there, the only other option is a 6.6L Duramax Turbo Diesel V8 engine that provides 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. That is a good engine, too, and both of them come with a 10-speed automatic transmission, but the lack of any additional options is a shame.
By comparison, Ford gives you four engines to choose from on most of their F-Series Super Duty trucks, starting with a 6.8L V8 with 405 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. If you want more power, then there is an available 7.3L Godzilla V8 engine that boosts power with 430 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque for greater output than Chevy's gas engine. For diesel power, the Super Duty trucks have an available 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8 that delivers 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque, surpassing what Chevy's trucks can offer. Going even further, there is a high-output version of this engine available with 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque for incredible power that far surpasses anything the Silverado HD trucks have available.
Having a powerful truck is about more than big specs that you can brag about—it is about having real-world capability that helps you get your job done. For most of us, that comes down to serious payload and towing capacities that can handle as much weight as you need them to. Both the Silverado HD and Ford Super Duty trucks far surpass what most other trucks out there are capable of, but there is no denying that there is still a clear winner between the two of them.
Looking at payload, for example, we should consider both the Silverado 2500 HD and the Silverado 3500 HD to see what they can do. The Silverado 2500 HD tops out at 3,689 lbs of maximum payload while the Silverado 3500 HD, with a dual rear-wheel (DRW) configuration can handle up to 7,234 lbs of maximum payload. Checking out the Ford F-250 Super Duty, it can handle up to 4,268 lbs of payload, far surpassing the maximum for the Silverado 2500 HD. The F-350 Super Duty leaves everything else behind with up to 8,000 lbs of maximum payload, letting you load it up with a tremendous amount of weight.
Of course, the weight you can haul behind your truck is just as important as what you can load onto it, and once again Ford comes out on top. The Chevy Silverado 2500 HD can handle up to 22,510 lbs of maximum conventional towing, while the Silverado 3500 HD can manage up to 36,000 lbs of fifth-wheel towing thanks to its DRW setup. By comparison, the Ford F-250 Super Duty gives you up to 23,000 lbs of conventional towing capacity, and you get up to 40,000 lbs of maximum fifth-wheel towing with the F-450 Super Duty and its DRW configuration. That is power that far surpasses the Silverado trucks, giving you incredible capability designed to help you get your job done, no matter what you need.
Bold performance, the power to help you get your job done, and gorgeous designs are all great with powerful trucks, but you also want features and things that elevate your driving experience each day. Looking at the Silverado HD trucks, they come with a standard 7-inch infotainment system, with a larger screen available, along with a Driver Information Center display for added functionality. They have impressive tailgates and trailering tech available to make towing easier and safer, which is great. Overall, however, they offer some decent technology but nothing that really wows us at the end of the day.
With the Ford Super Duty trucks, on the other hand, you get fantastic tech features designed to make your daily drive more rewarding and to help you get your job done. For starters, there is a standard 8-inch infotainment screen that is bigger than what Chevy offers, with a larger 12-inch display available if you like enhanced features and options.
