Chevy only offers four different engines on its fourth generation Silverado 1500. When this model began being offered in 2019, the base engine was a 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V6. However, this engine was paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, but it was discontinued after the 2021 model year. The base engine now is a 2.7-liter High Output Turbo I-4 gas engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission. All of the other current engines sport a 10-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the Ford, you can find a more recent Silverado 1500 with a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel I-6. The other two available engines that you will find on a used Silverado 1500 are a 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 and a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8.

In terms of performance options, the Silverado 1500 really can’t compete with the F-150 and its versatile engine lineup. For example, when looking at their respective 2023 models, the F-150 can offer up to 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque when opting for a pre-owned model equipped with the 3.5-liter High Output V6. If off-roading is on the agenda, getting behind the wheel of a pre-owned F-150 Raptor will give you the 5.2-liter supercharged V8 and the ability to harness a massive 700 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque. Looking at the 2023 Silverado 1500 lineup, your best option is the 6.2-liter V8 and its 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, but let’s face it; it doesn’t come close to what’s under the F-150’s hood.

The F-150’s Superior Towing and Hauling Capabilities

The maximum towing capability on the fourth generation Silverado 1500 is 13,300 lbs, which can be achieved with either the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 or the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel. The F-150 with the 5.0-liter V8 also comes close to this number, with a maximum trailering rating of 13,000 lbs. So, if you plan to tow a camper or boat for a weekend of recreation, you will be better served by a used F-150.

The same is true if you are looking to haul heavy loads for work. The fourteenth-generation Ford F-150 can carry up to 3,250 lbs, depending on which engine and other features you choose. This is significantly more than the 2,270 lbs the fourth-generation Silverado 1500 can haul. It is interesting that the three payload bed sizes on the Silverado are larger than the comparable ones on the F-150.
