Ford's Diesel History

While Ford has been building diesel engines for nearly a century, the first Ford diesel pickup for the American consumer market dates back to the early 1980s. The IDI 6.9L diesel engine debuted in the 1983 model year F-Series trucks. It was available starting in the F-250 and F-350 models. Back then, people were attracted to the low cost of diesel fuel and adopted diesel trucks as an option for a personal pickup truck. In 1988, the Ford diesel engine was revamped. The revisions boosted the power output and torque, something that Ford continues to do regularly in order to keep its diesel trucks at the front of the pack.

In the early 1990s, the larger IDI 7.3L turbo-diesel engine was released, and it was joined by the Power Stroke diesel engine. The Power Stroke diesel engines are now what you will find in most Ford diesel trucks. But even as Ford continues to modernize and adapt to new technologies in its diesel engines, there is still loyalty to the original Ford IDI diesel engines.

A Decade of Diesel Trucks

Improvements are made every model year to Ford diesel trucks, sometimes major overhauls and other times minor adjustments. Power levels, max tow ratings, features, and more will vary depending on the model year. That is why it's important for someone who's in the market for a used Ford diesel truck to understand the differences between each model year. Perhaps most importantly, up until 2018, Ford's diesel engines were only available in the company's Super Duty line of trucks. The models of the used Ford Super Duty trucks are F-250, F-350, and F-450, which offer a variety of specs. However, from 2018 until 2021, a new Power Stroke diesel engine was made available in the best-selling light-duty F-150.

The 2010 model of the Ford Super Duty was the last year to offer a 6.4L turbo-diesel V8 engine. This engine gets about 350 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. In 2011, Ford debuted a brand new diesel engine for its Super Duty trucks. The 2011 Super Duty trucks are equipped with a 6.7L Power Stroke turbo-diesel engine that gets up to 400 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque. Also new to 2011 is a heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission that works beautifully with the Power Stroke turbo-diesel engine. These stats put 2011 Super Duty models high in the segment and allow them to tow up to 24,400 lbs depending on the model and configuration.

Improving the Super Duty

In 2013, Ford's Super Duty trucks saw improvements to the braking capability, as well as the payload and towing capacity. The maximum towing in an F-450 Super Duty jumped to 24,700 lbs with a fifth-wheel setup or 18,500 lbs with a conventional hitch. Now more than ever, the Ford diesel trucks were made for adventure and getting every job done.

2015 was a big year of upgrades for Ford Super Duty diesel trucks. For starters, the 6.7L Power Stroke engine was upgraded to produce 440 hp and 860 lb-ft of torque, allowing the F-450 to tow as much as 31,200 lbs. You could also get an optional towing package for the F-350 that made it just as strong and capable as the previous year's F-450.

The diesel engine in Ford's Super Duty trucks got another upgrade in 2017. With 440 hp and 925 lb-ft of torque, we're confident a used 2017 Super Duty truck will get the job done. The F-250 got a major increase in maximum towing, now towing up to 21,000 lbs - just a little less than the 2010 F-450. New safety features, interior upgrades, and easier towing capabilities make the 2017 model year a well-rounded diesel truck.

Expanding Diesel Options

In 2018, Ford debuted the first-ever diesel Ford F-150, expanding the options available for diesel trucks. This model used a smaller 3.0L Power Stroke diesel that is better suited to the light-duty tasks that half-ton pickups are commonly used for. But with 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque, this engine is far from weak and is paired with a modern ten-speed automatic transmission.

More horsepower and torque fill the 2019 Ford Super Duty diesel trucks, with the 6.7L Power Stroke now offering 440 hp and 935 lb-ft of torque. The interior also gained new features such as available WiFi and a premium sound system. This makes it easy to stay connected and focused wherever your hard work and adventures take you, even in a used Ford truck.

The 2020 Ford Super Duty is Ford's most powerful diesel truck to date. The 6.7L Power Stroke diesel engine got yet another upgrade, which means even more horsepower and torque. You can expect 475 hp and an incredible 1,050 lb-ft torque. With top-quality safety features that use technology to keep your passengers and gear safe, combined with durable interior finishes, we think you will find a used 2020 Ford diesel truck a perfect option for you.

Diesel Truck Maintenance and Operation

It's not uncommon for questions to crop up when shopping for a used diesel truck, especially regarding maintenance differences for a diesel engine. However, Ford diesel trucks are easy to maintain. For example, the 6.7L Power Stroke is designed to go 10,000 miles between oil changes. Those who have owned a truck with a gas powertrain may notice these numbers are actually than the recommended maintenance schedule of many of those vehicles, which usually includes an oil change around every 7,500 miles.

Another common misconception is that diesel trucks need to idle constantly to remain in tip-top shape. In actuality, a modern diesel engine can be treated just like a gas engine, which is perfect for those who are new to diesel. Of course, short trips are rougher on any type of engine, but that doesn't mean you need to leave your diesel idling when you drop by the store. Albany shoppers will also be happy to hear that modern Ford diesel engines have no trouble starting on cold winter days. The Power Stroke engine includes glow plugs designed to quickly bring the engine up to temperature, so you won't have to worry about getting started in the morning after leaving your truck out in below-freezing weather overnight.

The only special maintenance that a modern diesel truck regularly requires is the replacement of its fuel filters. Because diesel fuel isn't as pure as gasoline, the fuel filters become clogged more quickly and should be replaced roughly every third oil change. You will also have to keep a closer eye on the extra emissions systems, which are designed to keep diesel engines from emitting harmful particulates. Diesel trucks need to be regularly filled with DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), which is added to a small tank behind the gas filler cap, just like topping off a gas tank.
