The subcompact SUV category of vehicles offers a wealth of opportunities to explore your favorite destinations thanks to their ever-increasing tech suites, capabilities, and performance features. Dodge has recently decided to take on the subcompact crossover segment with the Dodge Hornet, which debuted for the 2023 model year. Ford has also been attempting to corner the subcompact market with the Ford Bronco Sport, which was introduced as part of the Bronco revival for the 2021 model year. With both of these vehicles now competing to put their own spin on the subcompact crossover segment, which one stands out more between the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport vs 2024 Dodge Hornet?
The 2024 Ford Bronco Sport carries over a lot of features from the outgoing model year but with a few new surprises. As in previous years, the vehicle has two turbocharged engine options: a 1.5L EcoBoost and a 2.0L EcoBoost. One big new aspect of the 2024 Bronco Sport is the all-new Bronco Sport Free Wheeling, which includes a throwback livery to the classic Bronco models, featuring a multi-hue color scheme on the exterior that is designed to pay homage to the 1970s version of the Bronco.
The retro-livery is accompanied by some specially colored two-tone red-and-black wheels to give the whole vehicle a very spiffy look. There are also special black finishes for the grille, mirrors, and bumpers, along with a pinstripe orange interior design. In addition to this, the Black Appearance Package has been made available for the Big Bend trim, and two brand-new colors have been added to the exterior options in the form of Azure Gray and Desert Sand. The 2024 Bronco Sport is available across five different trims, which include the Big Bend, the Heritage, the Free Wheeling, the Outer Banks, and the Badlands.
Both the Dodge Hornet and the Ford Bronco Sport are subcompact SUVs featuring seating for up to five people across two rows. Both vehicles give you a significant amount of space to work with despite their diminutive sizes within the segment. However, the Ford Bronco Sport is the more capable of the two when it comes to capacities. In short, the Ford Bronco Sport offers more interior space than the Dodge Hornet.
With the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport, you have up to 32.5 cu.ft. of cargo space behind the second row of seats and up to 65.2 cu.ft. of space behind the first row. When the larger 2.0L EcoBoost engine is optioned, that decreases slightly to 29.4 cu.ft. of space behind the back row and up to 60.6 cu.ft. of space behind the first row of seats. The highlight here is that you have some worthwhile cargo space to make use of with the Bronco Sport but not so much with the Dodge Hornet.
The 2024 Hornet only has 27 cu.ft. of cargo space behind the second row while offering 57.7 cu.ft. of space behind the first row. While the Hornet still offers the ability to fold down the seats and store items throughout the vehicle, there is a significant space difference between the Hornet and Bronco Sport. When the Bronco Sport is optioned with the 2.0L EcoBoost, there is slightly less space to work with, yet it still offers 2.4 cu.ft. of additional space behind the second row over the Hornet and 2.9 cu.ft. more space behind the first row. No matter which version of the 2024 Bronco Sport you go with, you still get more space to utilize in the vehicle, both in terms of passenger volume and cargo storage capacity.
You may utilize your vehicle to do a lot of different things depending on your driving preferences. That could mean a slightly larger boat for a fishing trip or a slightly larger cargo trailer.
The 2024 Bronco Sport also has standard roof rails for additional storage or if you plan on adding roof racks to the vehicle. The Dodge Hornet, however, does not come standard with roof rails on any of its trims. This means that even if you weren't into trailering but wanted to bring extra cargo with you to a tailgating event, get-together, or camping trip, you're limited in what you can bring with you on the Hornet. But with the Bronco Sport, everything you need to tackle your weekend getaway, week-long vacation, or month-long adventure is built right into the SUV. If you want to add a cargo rack or additional storage, the roof rails provide you with that option.
