As we move further into the 2020s, here at DePaula Ford in Albany, NY, we see increased demand for hybrids and electric vehicles. As part of this increased interest, one of the most common comparisons we hear of is the 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid vs 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E. So we thought that this would be an excellent time to take a moment and give you a comparison of these two exciting Ford SUVs. Both vehicles are versatile, fun, and eco-friendly, but they approach the problem of moving away from traditional gasoline cars differently. Despite being similar in size and built by the same manufacturer, they offer different experiences with the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid being better suited to simply replacing a traditional gasoline car as a do-it-all vehicle, while the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E offers superior performance but at the cost of having to rethink how you intend to use your car.

Different Shapes, Similar Capacities

In terms of size, the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid and the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E are relatively similar. However, it may not appear that way at first glance because the two vehicles have rather different proportions. The 2020 Ford Escape hybrid is a traditional SUV, with a tall and boxy body. In contrast, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is closer to a blend between an SUV and a more traditional Mustang, which gives it a lower and longer profile than the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid. But do not let the sleek exterior fool you into thinking the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is not just as roomy on the inside. In fact, despite its lower roofline, it manages to have a half-inch more headroom than the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid and will seat five just as comfortably as the more traditional SUV.

When it comes to cargo space, both vehicles again achieve similar specifications in different ways. With both rows of seats in place, the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid has up to 35.4 cubic feet of cargo space, while the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E only has 29.0 cubic feet behind its rear seats. However, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has an additional 4.8 cubic feet in its front trunk (like an electric vehicle, it does not need an engine under the hood), bringing its total cargo space up to 33.8 cubic feet. If you fold down the rear seats in both vehicles, the cargo bay on the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid grows to 60.8 cubic feet while the maximum cargo capacity of the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E increases to an exceptional 64.4 cubic feet including the front trunk. While you may favor one over the other depending on what sort of cargo you plan to carry, both vehicles are more than capable of handling almost any task.

Electric Performance vs Worry-Free Hybrid

But the most significant difference between these two vehicles is, of course, their powertrains. The all-electric powertrain of the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E will save you more money on fuel costs and is better for the environment. However, if you plan to take it on long trips, then you will always have to be mindful of its more limited range and keep track of where the closest electric charging stations are. Still, with an estimated range of up to 300 miles and the ability to recharge at your house overnight, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is perfectly capable of handling the average person’s driving needs without ever needing to visit a public charging station. This ability to plug in the car when you get home and have a full tank when you leave in the morning is possibly the most considerable advantage of electric vehicles. It can simplify your daily routine by eliminating traditional refueling stops entirely.

In comparison to the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid provides a driving experience indistinguishable from that of a traditional gasoline car. Just fill it up at a regular gas station and drive it until the tank gets low. But with its combination of a four-cylinder gasoline engine and a pair of electric motors, the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid achieves a combined 41 MPG and an excellent 44 MPG in city traffic. So while it will still be burning gasoline, it will be doing so at a much lower rate than traditional gasoline cars. While the upcoming plug-in version of the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid does offer the possibility of running on batteries alone for very short distances, its minimal range means that most people will find that it is still burning gasoline more often than not.

But there is one other powertrain difference that sets these two vehicles apart – performance. The standard 2020 Ford Escape hybrid has 200 horsepower, while the plug-in version has 221 horsepower. This is actually more powerful than in the base model non-hybrid 2020 Ford Escape, and it is entirely sufficient for comfortable driving. However, it is not anything special and may be disappointing if you are currently driving a more powerful vehicle. That is not the case with the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E. The base model of the electric car comes with 255 horsepower, climbing all the way up to 459 horsepower for the top GT model. When combined with the extremely high instant torque of its electric motors, this produces true sports car level performance, and the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT will even outrun a 2020 Shelby GT500 Mustang.

Other Considerations

But even if the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid and the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E offer radically different powertrains and performance, they are designed and produced by the same manufacturer and feel similar on the inside. While the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid has a more traditional interior where the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is more technology-focused, both vehicles share many features between them and with other Ford designs.

Perhaps the most notable of these shared features is Ford’s excellent Sync3 infotainment system, which combines all of the elements one would expect to find in a modern vehicle. The system is easy to operate through either the large central touchscreen and surrounding buttons, the steering wheel controls, or the voice commands. Sync3 is also fully compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so that you can seamlessly connect your phone for calls, music streaming, or navigation no matter which operating system you prefer. Finally, the infotainment includes SiriusXM satellite radio and a 4G LTE wireless hotspot so that you will never lack for entertainment. But while the infotainment system is the same on both cars, the 2021 Mustang Mach-E does have the advantage of a massive 15.5” touchscreen against the 8” screen on the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid.

Both vehicles also have Ford’s sophisticate Co-Pilot360 suite of advanced safety technologies. This includes numerous valuable features such as collision alert, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic headlights. Together, these systems combine to create a safer and more convenient driving experience, allowing you to relax and enjoy your drive. However, the 2021 Mustang Mach-E again has a slight edge with its available active park assist and 360-degree cameras. Further special features on the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E include handless doors that open at the touch of a button, the ability to recognize your phone and adjust the car to your preferred settings, and multiple drive modes to tailor the car’s performance to your needs.

But in the end, despite their similarities, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E and the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid are very different vehicles. While they can do most of the same jobs, they do so differently. If you want to replace your existing vehicle with something that burns less gas without having to change your driving routine, then the 2020 Ford Escape hybrid is probably the right car for you. However, if you want high performance, advanced technology, and never to have to visit a gas station again, then you will be better served looking at the 2021 Mustang Mach-E.
