5 Ways the F-250 Is King of the Heavy Duty Pickups

One of the popular Ford Trucks, the front of a 2020 Ford Super Duty is driving in a desert.

If you’re looking into pickups that are ready to tackle rough and rugged terrain, fit for a modern lifestyle, and can ultimately get the job done — you’re sure to know that Ford trucks are among the most reliable out there. When it comes to heavy-duty trucks, the F-250 is always ready to put in a serious day’s worth of work, whether at home or on the construction site. With high towing and hauling capabilities, the Ford F-250 Super Duty is the ideal choice for determined laborers all across the country.

At DePaula Ford, we believe in the high-quality vehicles that have been produced by the Ford brand for over 100 years. It’s a name we trust and one you can, too. As the most popular selling vehicle in the United States for the past three decades, the Ford F-Series pickup has proven year after year that it’s a truck that you can bank it all on. While there are worthy competitors out there, none have been able to match up to the undisputed king.

#1: The Name

What comes with a name? In the case of heavy-duty pickups, there are a lot of popular names out there. You have the Ford F-250 Super Duty, the Silverado 2500 HD, the Ram 2500, and many others. It’s one of the most competitive markets in the world of all vehicles, let alone pickups. Trucks have always been called upon when the going gets tough, and for good reason. When you need to haul thousands of pounds of equipment or tow a heavy trailer, a pickup is the only vehicle that’s going to come through for you.

The Ford Motor Company has been around since 1903, or 116 years ago. Nearly the 19th century, which is remarkable. Dodge was founded in 1900, but Dodge trucks weren’t a thing until the 1970s, and then Ram trucks took over starting in 2010. Chevrolet came into existence back in 1911, eight years after Ford was founded.

As you can see, all three of these companies have been around for a long time, but today Ford holds its place at the top. Perhaps part of Ford’s stability and popularity lies in its legacy of being simple and upfront about who’s making the cars and trucks.

#2: The Performance

The 2020 Ford F-250 comes standard with a 6.2L Flex-Fuel gas V8 engine and is paired with a TorqShift G 6-speed transmission. If you want a real gas-powered machine, though, the 7.3L OHV PFI gas V8 engine will be your ideal choice. It boasts up to 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. And if you’re looking for something in the diesel section, the 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel engine with up to 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque will be just what you need.

The 2020 Silverado 2500 HD has two engine options. Your standard option is the 6.6L V8 gas engine with up to 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a diesel option with the Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 engine with up to 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque.

The 2020 Ram 2500 has two engine options as well. The standard is a 6.4L Heavy Duty V8 HEMI with MDS with up to 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque and the diesel option is a 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 engine with up to 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque.

Overall, the heavy-duty pickups from Chevy and Ram are in the same league as the Ford F-250, but they just come up short with their engine options. Ford’s 7.3L V8 engine and its 6.7L V8 Turbo Diesel engine are just better than the competition. In fact, they both offer best-in-class power ratings.

#’s 3 & 4: The Towing and Hauling

It’s nice to talk about what kind of engines you can have under each hood, but it may be more important to discuss the actual results you’re going to get from these engines. The maximum conventional towing capacity of the 2020 Ford F-250 is 20,000 lbs and 22,800 lbs for gooseneck towing. The maximum payload is 4,260 lbs.

The 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD has a maximum towing capacity of up to 18,500 lbs and a maximum payload of 3991 lbs. The 2020 Ram 2500 has a maximum towing capacity of up to 19,680 lbs and a maximum payload of 4,010 lbs.

The numbers are generally close when it comes to the towing and hauling capabilities of each of these trucks, but again the F-250 shows why it’s so popular. If you consistently put out the best numbers, then you’re going to consistently end up being the best pickup.

#5: The Pricing

Some of the best vehicles on the market are also the most expensive, which might be expected, but it doesn’t always have to be the case. What if there was a truck that could be both the best in terms of its specifications and in terms of its price?

The 2020 Ford F-250 has a starting MSRP of $33,705, compared to the 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD at $38,300 and the 2020 Ram 2500 at $33,645. Once again, we find the competition to be right there in terms of sheer numbers, and this time it’s by the slightest of margins that the F-250 comes out in front. In a vehicle class this competitive, you have to pull out all the stops and you can tell that Ford really has. They have the most popular pickup in the nation, and it just so happens to be affordable among the leading brands as well.

Staying on Top

While you might think there would eventually be a lapse somewhere along the way for Ford’s F-Series trucks, you can be sure to note that it hasn’t happened yet. The Ford trucks are standing tall and proud as the best pickups in the automotive industry, and it looks like it may stay that way for the foreseeable future. Instead of getting lax in their ways, Ford has continued to produce cars and trucks of the utmost quality, always with the consumer’s needs in mind.
