Ford Mustang Mach-E: Power and Efficiency Come Together

Not too long ago, if you were interested in a great vehicle, you had to choose: you could either get terrific performance or excellent efficiency and fuel economy. If you were looking for something that was an absolute blast to drive while also going easy on the environment and keeping you away from the gas pump, then you were out of luck. There wasn’t much to be done about it, and we all just sort of accepted it as the only way things could be. That is, of course, until companies like Ford cracked the code on how to build incredibly powerful and highly efficient vehicles.
The remarkable Ford Mustang Mach-E is the perfect example of this, a vehicle that represents a blend of raw power, gorgeous design, and incredible efficiency. As an all-electric model, the Mustang Mach-E lets you leave the gas pump behind forever and go further while charging it at public stations or at home in your own driveway. Of course, not every electric vehicle (EV) delivers the same impressive performance or terrific driving range from a full charge. Looking at the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs 2024 Toyota bZ4X, it’s easy to see that while other manufacturers struggle to keep up with what Ford is doing, they’re still coming up short.
First, Ford Gives You More Options
Before we get into specifics about performance and efficiency or range at a full charge (don’t worry, we will), we want to take a moment to recognize just how many options you have overall with the Mustang Mach-E. We’re big fans of options and customizability for any vehicle since it presents a greater value to a savvy car shopper who knows what they want. There’s no single model and trim level perfect for every driver, so by giving you the freedom to choose the kind of driving experience you want, it’s easier to drive away from our lot without feeling like you compromised on your favorite features.
The Mustang Mach-E has multiple different setups, depending on the power and driving range you’re looking for. You begin with the standard 72 kWh battery on the Select and Premium trims, which can be upgraded to an available 91 kWh Extended Range battery. Next, you can choose the standard single Primary eMotor that delivers rear-wheel drive (RWD) or the available Dual eMotor setup for electric all-wheel drive (eAWD). What’s more, you have total freedom to get these options in all four possible configurations, making it easy to decide if you want a greater focus on performance or range. Finally, the Mustang Mach-E GT and Rally Edition both come standard with a unique version of the dual-motor 91 kWh Extended Range battery designed for high performance, topping out at 480 hp and a whopping 700 lb-ft of torque, making it the perfect choice if you’re looking for an SUV to get your heart racing.
By comparison, Toyota remarkably falls short with the options it offers drivers interested in the bZ4X. There is a single-motor FWD setup that offers a 71.4 kWh battery or a dual-motor AWD configuration that features a slightly superior 72.8 kWh battery. That’s it, though—just those two options. This does give drivers a simple choice between enhanced performance and greater range. Still, ultimately, it’s a pretty shallow pool of options, and Ford gives you much greater freedom to get the vehicle you want.

Second, Ford Gives You More Power
Ford has been making some of the most powerful and sophisticated vehicles on the road, with legendary options like the iconic Mustang and the F-150 full-size pickup, and this legacy shines the most when looking at the numbers for the Mustang Mach-E. Despite being an all-electric system, the Mustang Mach-E sacrifices none of the power we expect from Ford. How does it compare to a similarly-priced electric SUV in the same class?
For starters, we know Toyota has only two battery choices on the bZ4X, and compared to Ford’s options, both are surprisingly meager. The single-motor setup offers 201 hp and 196 lb-ft of torque, which would be fine for a conventional compact SUV at a much lower price but remains remarkably small within the bZ4X’s price range. Going with the dual-motor option improves performance with 214 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque, but that’s not nearly as much of a boost as we’d like to see.
By comparison, the Mustang Mach-E is on another level entirely. The single-motor RWD Standard Range battery boasts 265 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque, while the equivalent dual-motor AWD version delivers 325 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. We’re already seeing a massive improvement; these are both merely standard options. Choosing the single-motor RWD Extended Range battery nets you 290 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque, while the dual-motor AWD equivalent boosts you up to 365 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. In case that’s not enough, as mentioned before, the Extended Range battery exclusive to the GT and Rally Edition is tuned for 480 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque, providing you with an incredible experience far beyond anything Toyota even tries to offer. You might think that Toyota must’ve focused on impressive range then, right?
Third, Ford Gives You More Range and Efficiency
Like with performance, the lack of additional battery and motor combinations for the Toyota bZ4X severely limits its potential. At best, the standard single-motor model gets an estimated 252 miles of range from a full charge. Note that this is only the case with the starting model; the higher trim actually loses mileage due to extra features. Going with a dual-motor model makes things worse, and it can get an estimated 228 miles of range from a full charge. Considering this model starts at over $3,000 more than the 2024 Mustang Mach-E, it isn’t a good look.
By comparison, the two battery packs from Ford give you more power for the Mustang Mach-E and a much greater range without compromising performance. The single-motor RWD Standard Range battery gets an estimated 250 miles of range from a full charge, while the dual-motor AWD equivalent can go about 230 miles from a full charge. As expected, choosing the single-motor RWD Extended Range battery gets you up to 320 miles of range from a full charge, and taking the dual-motor AWD equivalent only takes that down to 300 miles of estimated range, which is still far better than anything the bZ4x can come close to. We hope this illustrates how well Ford has embraced the wants of those of us interested in all-electric performance vehicles.

Finally, Ford Simply Gives You More
In case superior performance and fantastic driving distance for the Mustang Mach-E weren’t enough, Ford also has a number of features and options that are better than what Toyota offers. For example, compare the 12.3-inch infotainment display of the Toyota bZ4X to the gorgeous 15.5-inch central screen inside the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and you’ll quickly see what we mean. Add the overall stunning design and comfortable interior features that Ford has packed into this beautiful SUV, and you have a combination that every other brand is struggling to keep up with.
