How Does the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Compete Against the 2024 Kia EV6?

No longer do you have to worry about having one or the other because there are now cars that give you the best of both worlds: performance and electricity working in unison, not to mention tech that helps culminate these automotive experiences into what the future of the industry looks like to many.

The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs 2024 Kia EV6 is what we’re talking about today because these two BEVs have been on the minds of many, and if you’re purchasing your first BEV, it’s best you have all the facts as early as possible. Does the Kia EV6 have what it takes to dethrone the Mustang Mach-E, which comes from a family of sports cars that have been internationally acclaimed for decades? That’s what we’re here to find out today, so let’s begin.

A Larger Battery Means Larger Results

The way batteries work can ultimately be boiled down to this: the larger the battery, the more cells it holds, which in turn lends a lengthier capacity. In the case of BEVs like the Mustang Mach-E and EV6, extra capacity is used for increased performance without sacrificing the mileage range. Across the board, the Mustang Mach-E commonly outperforms the EV6 thanks to the latter’s reliance on generally smaller batteries. This is perhaps most noticeable with the standard powertrains.

The base powertrain in the 2024 Mustang Mach-E is a 72 kWh battery with a single motor. Inside the lowest-cost EV6 is a 58 kWh battery that is also linked to a single motor. This already sparks a massive difference between the two, as the battery in Ford’s BEV has a capacity that’s 24% larger than the base battery in the EV6, which then leads to an even greater divide between the two.

With the base EV6 powertrain, you get 167 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which, for a vehicle not too dissimilar in price to the Mustang Mach-E, is a rather abysmal turnout compared to the 266 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque the Mustang Mach-E’s base powertrain has. In their base configurations, the Mustang Mach-E provides 59% more horsepower and a 23% greater torque output. The number of miles you can travel on a single charge hasn’t been officially unveiled as of yet for the 2024 model, but given the powertrain has remained the same from last year’s model, it’s fair to assume you’ll still get a mileage range that may beat the EV6’s base configuration.

The 58 kWh battery is only available in a single motor setup, but the 72 kWh battery in the Mustang Mach-E can be purchased in a dual motor configuration. And, even if you buy an EV6 with a more comparable 77.4 kWh battery, it still only comes with a single motor in its default setup. The 290 hp and 427 lb-ft of torque that stems from the 72 kWh battery with the extra motor in the Mustang Mach-E eclipses the 225 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque in the EV6 with its 77.4 kWh battery and single motor. However, if you opt for the additional motor on the EV6, performance does a better job of catching up to the Mustang Mach-E, with 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque.

While the EV6 fairs better if you opt for a dual-motor configuration, the performance is trumped again by an even larger 91 kWh battery that your Mustang Mach-E can come with. Like the standard smaller battery, the 91 kWh battery comes with one motor in its regular configuration, but even then, performance is almost on par with the dual motor setup in the EV6. The 91 kWh battery and single motor outputs 311 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque.

As you can likely guess, adding another motor to the 91 kWh battery adds a decent horsepower improvement, moving onto 346 hp while retaining the 428 lb-ft of torque. However, there’s still one powertrain for each BEV that we must talk about, and the Mustang Mach-E comes with a new trim. The EV6 doesn’t have a comparable equivalent to the Mustang Mach-E Rally Edition.

The 2024 Mustang Mach-E Rally Edition

You may have noticed that the Mustang Mach-E draws its name from the titular muscle car turned sports car, which has been a staple of Ford engineering for decades. The Mustang Mach-E has always provided ample power for its class, but with trims like the Mach-E Rally Edition, we can see this BEV truly flourish and create a name for itself. The Mustang Mach-E Rally utilizes the same powertrain as the 91 kWh battery and dual motor setup we mentioned, but it’s gotten a massive uptick in performance that sees it reaching new heights, unlocking anything Ford has ever achieved in an EV.

With the Mach-E Rally, you’re getting 480 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque from a specialized version of the 91 kWh battery with a dual motor powertrain. This 650 lb-ft of torque is absurd in the best of ways. And, against the 545 lb-ft of torque that the EV6’s most performant powertrain has—the 77.4 kWh battery with dual motor with an exclusive performance profile for the GT trim—the Mach-E Rally Edition has 19% greater torque output, which means the Mustang Mach-E outperform the EV6 in both its lower-end models and the premium ones like the Mustang Mach-E Rally.

Best of all, performance isn’t the only thing that separates the Mach-E Rally from any EV6 trim. With the Mustang Mach-E Rally, you’re getting a vehicle better suited for adventure—namely off-roading, which takes some serious engineering ingenuity to get working in a BEV like this. Of course, Ford takes challenges like this in stride, and the Mustang Mach-E Rally Edition has larger wheels, a distinct design, and style that borrows from the traditional Mustang, including a protruding rear spoiler and that unforgettable Mustang badging that proudly sits in the middle of the front grille.

Ford knows off-roading vehicles, and the Mustang Mach-E is made by a reputable off-road-friendly manufacturer. With the Mustang Mach-E Rally’s increased ground clearance, ample-sized 19-inch wheels, and protective shielding underneath the carriage that protects the bottom of your car from flying debris when driving on a rocky trail, it’s clear the Mach-E Rally is setting a precedent for BEVs that you can take off the main roads.

BEVs as a concept aren’t anything new, but in the consumer automotive market, purchasing a vehicle that doesn’t rely on gasoline is a more viable concept than ever. This is largely thanks to advances in battery tech, not to mention research and development that couldn’t have happened without talented engineers, time, and plenty of money.

The Mustang Mach-E is an interesting vehicle because its Mustang name roots it in the minds of many as a performance vehicle, but that doesn’t mean it was an overnight success. Where we are with the Mustang Mach-E currently proves that Ford has finally made the Mustang Mach-E what it always could be: a reliable and viable solution to high-performance BEVs.
