With the 2024 Ford Super Duty vs 2024 Chevy Silverado HD, these two nameplates are ready to go another round for heavy-duty pickup truck supremacy. Adding to the stakes is the introduction of the fifth-generation Ford Super Duty in 2023, and the Chevy Silverado HD line-up has gotten a makeover for 2024.

When you work and live big, you need a truck that does the same. For more than 45 years, the Ford Super Duty lineup—which includes the Ford F-250, F-350, and F-600—has delivered for Albany-area construction workers, off-road adventurers, and everyone else who demands the best from their truck. But are the updates to the Chevy Silverado HD enough to knock the Super Duty off the throne in the heavy-duty class? The highest configuration unleashes 500 hp and a whopping 1,2000 lb-ft of torque for tackling any terrain with any cargo. It can go from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds to boot. Even the “low-end” Super Duty turbo diesel option still beats out the Silverado HD with 475 and 1,050, respectively. Ford’s TorqShift also has up to six different modes, including Normal, Slippery, Tow/Haul, Eco, Deep Sand/Snow, and Rock Crawl.

No matter what terrain you’re on, the Ford Super Duty will get you to your destination. As one final notch in the Super Duty’s belt, four-wheel drive is standard for all XLT trims and up, whereas 4WD is merely optional for the Silverado HD. On slick roads and slicker dirt, you’ll be thankful for the extra drive.

Towing and Payload: Super Hauling With a Super Duty

Some top-end speed and styling are certainly nice in a heavy-duty truck—but longtime owners know they aren’t for going fast and looking good. These trucks are for getting you, your friends, and a whole lot of supplies over any terrain. When it comes to hauling, the 2024 Ford Super Duty is a shining star. In the top-end Ford F-450, you’ll be in the control of up to a 40,000-lb gooseneck towing capacity and 6,457-lb payload capacity. Even in conventional towing, you still have a 30,000-pound towing max. From full-size campers to welders, generators, and other construction equipment, a Ford Super Duty can do it all.

Ford also gives you the tools you need to tow things smartly and safely. The Super Duty has optional onboard scales that not only precisely weigh your payload but make sure it’s properly balanced. You can also add their Smart Hitch feature so you know the exact weight for towing. Other available options to improve your towing include a Blind Spot Information System with coverage of up to 33 ft so you can see when other vehicles are next to the trailer. It also includes tail lamps to improve rear visibility at night. The Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Backup Assist onboard cameras allow you to monitor and keep your cargo perfectly positioned, and Trailer Navigation changes your route to account for the trailer’s height and width.

In this important category, the Chevy Silverado HD falls short again. It peaks at 36,000 lbs of trailering capacity with a diesel engine. With the gas engine, it barely breaks 19,000 lbs of available towing—more than 50% less than a gas-powered Super Duty. It does have solid trailering technology, such as blind zone alerts, a hitch view, and adaptive cruise control. But even if the Silverado HD were a decisive winner in the tech department, it still wouldn’t be enough to make up for the huge gap in sheer hauling ability.

The Interior: Super Comfort in the Super Duty

Okay, so it’s apparent the Ford Super Duty still towers above the Silverado HD. But what about in the cabin? Let’s crawl inside each truck to see how comfortable you’ll be as you tow, haul, and rock crawl. Each vehicle has several cab and door configurations, so there are options depending on what you’re looking for. For the sake of simplicity, let’s compare how the Ford F-250 and Silverado 2500 HD measure up in the roomiest Crew Cab design:

The standard infotainment screen is bigger than the standard Silverado HD option (8 vs. 7 inches), as is the instrument cluster display (4 vs. 3.5 inches). Other available features, such as reclining leather seats, a moonroof, and a Bang & Olufsen 14-speaker system, give you even more comfort behind the wheel.
