#5: Chevy Blazer

The Chevy Blazer is an excellent midsize SUV that regularly sits at a lower price than its contemporaries, but that’s not the only advantage Chevy’s beloved midsize SUV has. The Chevy Blazer isn’t only cost-effective, but it’s also impressively fuel-efficient and, using a 2022 Blazer as an example, can be as performant as many midsize SUV shoppers would want their vehicle to be. The 2022 Blazer also has the advantage of a standard nine-speed automatic transmission that pairs beautifully with either the turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine or the 3.6L V6.
Models like the 2021 Blazer and earlier instead utilized a 2.5L I-4 engine as the standard inclusion, but its 193 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque fall behind the 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque of the turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine––fuel efficiency is better too. Older Blazer models with the 2.5L I-4 engine aren’t available with all-wheel drive, but models with the turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine or 3.6L V6 can be purchased with an all-wheel drivetrain instead. Blazer models with the 3.6L V6 engine output 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, but its impressive towing capacity of 4,500 lbs is greater than some of its competitors, like the Hyundai Santa Fe or Cadillac XT5. The one downside to the Chevy Blazer is its maximum 64.2 cu.ft. of space, which is less than many of the other midsize SUVs on the market.

#4: Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback has the benefit of being priced lower than most midsize SUVs on the market. If you’re on a budget, the Outback is the go-to choice as you’ll likely find an excellent deal on one given their low starting price when they’re new. Outback models from 2020 onwards share the same pair of powertrains; while models released before the update offer engines you’ll still find performant and fuel-efficient, the newer engines are even more so. The Outback utilizes Boxer engines, and in the case of models like 2020, 2021, and 2022 Outback, there’s a 2.5L Boxer-4 and a turbocharged 2.4L Boxer-4, the latter of which gives Outback owners 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The maximum towing capacity of the 2022 Outback is 3,500 lbs with the turbocharged Boxer, but some may find the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to leave something to be desired––not everyone will feel this way, however.

Another reason why the Subaru Outback has made our list of the top-five midsize SUVs is because of its large interior that exceeds the maximum cargo space of some of its more costly competitors, such as the Chevy Blazer. With the 2021 Outback, drivers have a minimum of 32.5 cu.ft. of space––slightly more than the 30.5 cu-ft of space that Blazer models from the same year have. Folding down the back row of seats increases cargo space to 64.2 cu.ft. of space on the Blazer, whereas the Outback’s cargo space is increased to 75.7 cu.ft––an 18% increase over the Blazer, and significantly cheaper.

#3: Jeep Grand Cherokee

Jeep fans tend to go from one Jeep vehicle to the next, and they’re often well familiar enough with the brand to trust their judgment and not deviate to any other off-roading-oriented brands. If you’ve never owned a Jeep vehicle before, a used Grand Cherokee is a fantastic place to start. Grand Cherokee models are better suited for off-roading than most other midsize SUVs. Amenities like an off-roading-tuned suspension and better ground clearance than its contemporaries are made even more useful by a four-wheel drivetrain to withstand rugged terrains and harsh weather conditions.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a versatile vehicle you should buy if you’re one for adventure and not willing to settle for anything that could be considered “mundane.” Using the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee as our example, the best performance stems from a 5.7L HEMI V8 engine known as the Eagle engine. The Eagle engine gives this midsize SUV 357 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. Most notable is the 7,200 lbs of maximum towing capacity that is only matched by the far pricier BMW X5 and X6 models. Additionally, the Grand Cherokee offers up to 70.8 cu-ft of cargo space, putting it above the likes of the Chevy Blazer and Cadillac XT5.

#2: Honda Passport

What the Honda Passport has going for it is exceptional cargo space coupled with ample performance. The Honda Passport’s interior is best described as cavernous. For example, the 2020 Passport always has at least 50.5 cu.ft. of space available to you and every other passenger. This type of space is regularly reserved for full-size or at least three-row SUVs, but with the Passport, you’ll have the benefit of extra cargo space at a lower price.

Folding down the back row reveals an additional 50.2 cu.ft. of space, bringing the total to an immaculate 100.7 cu.ft. Aside from the generous cargo space that obliterates its competition, the Passport is also a capable vehicle that can tow extra cargo so long as it’s within its maximum capacity of 5,000 lbs. The Passport should be at least a thought in your mind if you’re shopping for a used midsize SUV.

#1: Ford Edge

Manufacturers around the world can try, but they can’t match the integrality of an automobile produced by one of the most established and honored manufacturers in the world. The manufacturer we speak of is Ford. Ford vehicles and America go hand-in-hand––the best-selling vehicle in the country is the credible Ford F-150, after all. Ford builds vehicles that garner a loyal fanbase, and every facet of Ford’s lineup has received equal attention. There’s only one midsize SUV under Ford’s lineup, but it’s perhaps the best of the bunch, especially if you’re looking in the used market.

The Ford Edge is a perfect all-rounder because it’s fairly priced, can outperform some of its competitors, and is larger than some others, but it’s all unquestionably of Ford’s distinguished build quality. 2019 through 2022 Edge models that you’ll find on the used market all utilize the same two powertrains, with the only difference being a variation in transmissions depending on the model year. Ultimately, if you purchase a pre-owned Ford Edge from the past few years, you’ll get either a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine with 250 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque or a twin-turbo 2.7L V6 engine that produces 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque.

We also appreciate the Ford Edge because it always brings the best tech that Ford offers at the time of its release. For example, a variety of models released before the 2021 Edge have a built-in SYNC3 infotainment center, which is still heavily utilized by millions of drivers. 2021 Edge models and later instead use a tall 12-inch SYNC4 infotainment center, complete with all the newer quality-of-life features like Wireless capabilities for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
