The 2020 Ford F-150: Choosing the Right Engine
When buying a new truck (or any vehicle really), one of the most enjoyable parts of the process is getting to pick the trim and options that make it perfect for what you need. We always enjoy going over the features and available choices with our customers because we can see just how excited they are about their new vehicle and everything it will be able to let them do. Once you have looked at the different Ford trucks for sale and chosen the incredible 2020 Ford F-150, then you still have some big decisions to make.
In addition to your options for trims and all sorts of different features inside and out, perhaps the single most crucial decision you will have to make is the engine you want. While it is true that there are some trim limitations and restrictions on some of these, we often find it’s easier to decide on the engine that meets your needs and then work with the trims available, rather than the other way around. You’ll need to know what kind of power you need, in particular, what type of towing and payload potential you want to be able to have. Your engine choice will also impact the kind of gas mileage you can get, so figuring these things out ahead of time will make it a lot easier to pick the right engine. Let’s take a look at the six fantastic engines available on the 2020 Ford F-150 and see what each has to offer.
3.3L Ti-VCT V6
This engine is your starting option for the Ford F-150, and it’s available on the XL and XLT trims. Although far from the most powerful offering on this truck, it is still a great place to start and certainly enough for a lot of people. This is a 3.3L Ti-VCT V6 engine that offers up to 290 hp and up to 265 lb-ft of torque for excellent overall performance. In terms of fuel economy, you can get up to an estimated 19/25 MPG in the city and highway with this engine.
When properly configured, you can get up to 7,700 lbs. of maximum towing with this engine, and it offers a maximum payload of up to 1,990 pounds. It’s very important to remember that the towing and payload both depend on a lot of different factors, including the overall configuration of the F-150 you choose, so ask us about any particular model you’re interested in and its potential. This engine comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and is an excellent jumping-off point among Ford trucks for sale.
Next up, we have the first of several EcoBoost engines available, which you can get on the XL, XLT, and Lariat trims for the F-150. This is a 2.7L EcoBoost engine that delivers up to 325 hp and up to 400 lb-ft of torque. You can see, this is already a pretty big jump up from the starting engine and provides you with genuinely thrilling driving experiences. With this engine, you get an estimated 20/26 MPG in the city and on the highway with a 4×2 configuration.
All that power doesn’t go to waste, however, as this engine gives you a maximum towing capacity of up to 9,000 lbs or a maximum payload of up to 2,470 lbs. That depends on the overall configuration and other options you choose, of course, so pay attention to the particular specs of any specific Ford truck for sale that you look at. Overall, this is a very solid option that is more than enough for a lot of our customers.
5.0L Ti-VCT V8
If you like the idea of a Twin independent Variable Cam Timing engine, but want more power than the starting engine has to offer, then this is the way to go. This is a powerful 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine that delivers up to 395 hp and up to 400 lb-ft of torque. It is available on just about every trim for the 2020 F-150, so if you like it, then you still have a lot of freedom in getting the truck you want with this engine.
With such a powerful engine under the hood, you get up to 11,500 lbs of maximum towing capacity or up to 3,270 lbs of maximum payload when appropriately configured. That’s the highest payload available on this pickup. This engine gives the F-150 up to 17/23 MPG in the city and on the highway and delivers a great driving experience overall.
Here is one of the best engine options for the 2020 Ford F-150, giving you tremendous power and a fantastic driving experience. The available 3.5L EcoBoost engine offers up to 375 hp and up to 470 lb-ft of torque. You can quickly see that this is much more torque than any of the previous engines, though it does have a bit less horsepower than the previous 5.0L engine.
All of that torque makes this a great option for hauling a lot of gear, however, and it can have a maximum towing capacity of up to 13,200 lbs (the highest available towing for any 2020 F-150) or a maximum payload of up to 3,230 lbs when properly equipped and configured. Fuel economy with this engine comes in at an estimated 17/23 MPG in the city and on the highway, so it is a fine choice for a lot of different uses.
3.5L High-Output EcoBoost
At first, you might think this is no different from the previous engine, as it is also a 3.5L EcoBoost option. This high-output version, however, has numerous performance enhancements to make it much more powerful than the standard 3.5L. All of these improvements mean that it can deliver up to 450 hp and up to 510 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful engine option for the 2020 F-150.
All of that power comes through and means you can get up to 11,100 lbs of maximum towing capacity or up to 1,520 lbs of maximum payload when properly configured. This engine comes paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission for a fantastic driving experience, and it gets up to an estimated 17/22 MPG in the city and on the highway. If you need incredible performance and a truck that is a thrill to drive, then this is the way to go.
3.0L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel
Finally, what is a truck without an option for a diesel engine? The 2020 Ford F-150 can come with a 3.0L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel that delivers up to 250 hp and up to 440 lb-ft of torque. The lower horsepower but incredible torque is precisely what you would expect from a diesel, and the torque comes through even at low RPM ranges.
All of that torque shows when you look at the available maximum towing capacity of up to 11,500 lbs that you can get with this engine, or up to 2,020 lbs of maximum payload. Fuel economy is excellent, as you would expect with a diesel engine, offering an estimated 21/29 MPG in the city and on the highway. While a diesel engine is not right for everyone, if it’s something you’re interested in when looking at Ford trucks for sale, then we’ve got you covered.
