Shopping for a pre-owned vehicle is a great way to maximize your buying dollar. Depreciation will hit any vehicle, but when going with used Ford trucks, the original buyer will take the majority of the depreciation hit. This lets you save money while scoring the best-selling vehicle in the United States. However, when checking out the different used Ford trucks at DePaula Ford, you will see both used trucks and those marked as Certified Pre-Owned. There is a difference between the two, so before you come out to the lot, here is everything you need to know regarding Ford Certified Pre-Owned vs used trucks.

Both Are Used

Both Certified Pre-Owned and used Ford trucks are used vehicles. However, not all used Fords qualify for pre-owned status. There are a set number of qualifiers a Ford needs to check off in order to obtain this kind of qualification. With the qualification, you will receive several benefits that go above and beyond what a regular used truck offers. So the main similarity is that both vehicle types had a previous owner (or owners).

Becoming A Ford Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle

All manufacturers offer a Certified Pre-Owned status. However, there are slight variations with what, say, a Ford required to obtain the status and what a Chevy, Mazda, Nissan, or any other model out there required. So when shopping around the used lot at DePaula Ford, you will find off-brand vehicles. In order for these other brands to receive certification, it will need to follow a different checklist. These requirements listed here are Ford-specific.

For a used Ford truck to be recognized as a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, it needs to be no older than six model years and have no more than 80,000 miles on it. If it checks these boxes off it will then need to pass a comprehensive vehicle history report and a 172-point physical inspection. If there has been any safety recalls on the model and part replacements are needed, these changes will be performed.

If the truck passes these requirements, it will receive a Certified Pre-Owned status. Of course, the status can be taken away. If, for example, a vehicle is six model years old when it comes in, and it receives its certification but does not sell when a new model comes out, the certification will be removed as it is now seven model years old. So while it is not likely, it is possible to lose certification before a vehicle is sold.

What Comes With Certification

When a vehicle is recognized as a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, it does come with a number of benefits. This includes a 7-year/100,000 mile limited powertrain warranty coverage, a 12-month/12,000 mile comprehensive warranty starting at the time of purchase, a $100 deductible, 24-hour roadside assistance, the reimbursement of up to $500 per day for up to three days related to any vehicle breakdowns, a rental car reimbursement of up to $30 a day for up to five days (if the vehicle requires overnight repairs), lockout assistance up to $50, destination expense up to $75 to cover any emergency taxi or rental costs, plus a fuel delivery of up to 2 gallons if it runs out.

All of this comes as part of the Certified Pre-Owned package. These vehicles also may come with a lower APR financing and access to offers similar to new Ford pickup sales (for qualified buyers).

So What’s The Benefit Of Buying A Used Truck

A Certified Pre-Owned truck does come with a number of benefits. So much so you might question the benefits of buying a non-certified pickup. Now, just because a vehicle doesn’t qualify for certification does not mean it isn’t a great pickup. In fact, there are a number of benefits behind going with a used truck.

First, the truck will still go through an extensive inspection process. We do not buy a used truck off of someone and then immediately turn around and sell it. The truck will go through an extensive inspection, and it will be fully detailed. You can also obtain the Carfax report. This way, you’ll know the vehicle history, including how many drivers the vehicle has had, any accident reports, and maintenance records. You’ll also receive a warranty and servicing coverage from our team at DePaula Ford. While these will vary a bit from the Certified Pre-Owned coverage, our services are still here to help ensure you’re fully confident with your purchase.

One of the main benefits of buying a non-Certified Pre-Owned vehicle is the price. Most certified trucks are newer, with lower mileage. This means you’ll likely pay more for the models. However, with a used truck, the vehicle might be slightly older or have a few more miles. The beautiful thing with trucks is Ford only releases a new generation maybe once or so a decade. Due to this, your vehicle will not look all that old. Even if it is a generation removed it will still have a number of the current features for a fraction of the price.

Which Is Right For You?

It all comes down to what you want out of your used truck. If you’re interested in a newer model but don’t want to pay the price of a brand new pickup, you should look into the Certified Pre-Owned vehicles. Here you’ll pay a price point that is higher, but you’ll save a considerable amount over new. And, often, drivers who leased a Ford pickup will bring their vehicles in after a year or two to upgrade. This means you can purchase a vehicle that’s only two or three model years old with low mileage. However, if you are looking for ways to save the most money, you can find a great deal with a non-certified used truck. Ford trucks are built to last, so you’ll find some trucks that are a little older, but will still last a lifetime with proper maintenance. This is also a great option if you want a work truck that won’t be your daily driver. Why pay tens of thousands of dollars more for a work truck that you won’t be using all day every day?

Ultimately the decision comes down to you. The best way to decide which of the two is right for you is to come out to DePaula Ford and check out the wide selection of used and Certified Pre-Owned Ford pickups.
