Used F-150 Shopping Tips and Highlights
If you live in Albany, NY, and are looking to purchase a pre-owned vehicle, there are some important things to consider that go beyond simply searching “used car dealer near me.” This is even more important for anyone looking for an ever-popular Ford F-150. That’s why we took the time to create a comprehensive list of used F-150 shopping tips/highlights. Helping you make an informed decision about your next vehicle purchase is part of our customer satisfaction guarantee. Let’s dive right in!
#1. Choosing the Size
For folks who have been considering purchasing a used Ford F-150, the first thing you need to think about is the size. You will be able to find this pickup truck in many different configurations, so you need to know exactly what you are looking for. The regular cab only seats three people across a front bench seat. The SuperCab, otherwise known as the extended cab, can hold five passengers. Finally, the SuperCrew (crew cab) can carry up to 6 people. The larger cabin styles are best for families or people who need to transport a team of workers to a job site.
The other size you need to consider is the bed length. There are three that vary depending on the cab style. Regular and SuperCabs can be found with a 6.5- or 8-foot bed, and the SuperCrew may have a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed. Once you know which size is best suited to your lifestyle, this will help narrow down your search for a used F-150 quite a lot.
#2. Power and Performance
Now that you’ve chosen your desired truck size, the next part can get a little tricky. There are so many different engines available on used F-150 models that it can be a bit difficult to find the exact one you are looking for. However, you can rest assured that pre-owned F-150 trucks at DePaula Ford are powered by robust motors that deliver the best performances.
If you come across a 2016 or 2017 F-150, it may be powered by a 3.5-L V6 engine that generates 282 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque. That’s the base motor for this model year. It gets about 20 mpg combined (18 mpg /25 highway) with RWD and 19 mpg combined (17 city/23 highway) with 4WD. There is also a turbocharged 2.7-L V6 that produces 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque. Mated with RWD, it has a fuel economy set at 22 mpg combined (19 city/26 highway). The 4WD version gets 20 mpg combined (18 city/23 highway). Next is the 5.0-L V8 engine that pumps out 385 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque. RWD models get 18 mpg combined (15 city/22 highway), and 4WD models get 17 mpg combined (15 city/21 highway). Lastly, the turbocharged 3.5-L V6 offers 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy is rated at 20 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway) for RWD and 19 mpg combined (17 city/23 highway) for 4WD. Maximum towing capacities vary greatly depending on the powertrain. Although starting capacities are at 7,600 pounds, some models can pull up to 12,200 pounds. Every 2016 F-150 offers Tow/Haul mode to make pulling a trailer easier.
The 2018 Ford F-150 trucks get an all-new engine option that you may come across during your search. It’s a 3.3-liter V6 motor that generates 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. All of the aforementioned powertrains are still available on the 2018 vehicles. For anyone looking for a diesel, you’ll want to stick with 2018 or newer, as the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 Power Stroke diesel engine was added. It generates 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, with class-leading 30 mpg highway for 4×2 systems.
#3. Choosing the Trim
Typically, there are seven trim levels to choose from on newer used F-150 models. Let’s take a look at what makes each one unique.
The base XL model rolls on 17-inch steel wheels and features easy-to-clean vinyl flooring and cloth upholstery. The windows and the tilt-and-telescoping steering column are manual, and the infotainment interface is displayed on a 4.2-inch monitor that operates Bluetooth and a four-speaker stereo. You may also find a few XL models that have the Chrome or Sport Appearance package. Trailer-sway control and pre-wired trailer connections are also included for optimized towing. If you manage to find an XL with 4WD, it may include the FX4 Off-Road package that adds skid plates, hill-descent control, off-road shocks, and other off-roading features.
Stepping up to the XLT will add alloy wheels, chrome exterior accents, fog lamps, and rear privacy glass. This version also comes with carpeted floors and under-seat storage compartments. There are several packages that may also be included on an XLT. Highlights from these packages may include heated side mirrors, the Sync 3 infotainment interface, rear parking sensors, heated front seats, satellite radio, and more.
The most popular trim for the F-150 is the Lariat. Since it’s right in the middle, it offers a multitude of great features at a reasonable price. Many of the highlights previously listed as options for the XLT model come standard on the Lariat. Also included are larger 18-inch wheels, front tow hooks, keyless ignition/entry, driver memory setting, heated/cooled front seats, and dual-zone climate control. Optional highlights on this model include an 11-speaker Sony sound system and safety add-ons such as rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, frontal collision warning, a surround-view camera system, and more. Pre-owned 2018 Lariat models may be equipped with an upgraded 11-speaker Bose stereo instead of the Sony sound system.
There are a few key highlights to keep in mind about the King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trims. First, the King Ranch is only available as a SuperCrew model. Its Western-themed interior is perfect for a true country feel, and it features heated back seats and an integrated trailer brake controller. The Platinum is much more contemporary with its modern interior style. Riding on massive 20-inch wheels, this beast has deployable running boards to help passengers get inside. The stately cabin features wood and aluminum accents for a sophisticated look. The Limited gets premium leather upholstery and larger 22-inch wheels.
As for the off-roading F-150 truck, the Raptor is the way to go. Rolling on 17-inch wheels, it is equipped with skid plates to protect the underside from damage. It also comes with flared fenders, off-roading tires, and a modified long-travel suspension for enhanced handling. Its reinforced frame and unique 4WD system allow you to go practically anywhere. If you love to head off into the wild on adventures, this is the used F-150 you should be searching for.
