Which Trim of the Ford EcoSport is Right For You?
First introduced for the 2018 model year, the Ford EcoSport is the most compact and affordable out of all of the Ford SUVs. But despite its low price and subcompact size, the 2020 Ford EcoSport is still a versatile vehicle that lives up to the reputation of the larger Ford SUVs. With plenty of space for five passengers and up to 50 cubic feet of cargo, as well as a commanding ride height and available all-wheel drive, the Ford EcoSport is an SUV that makes a great option for drivers who need capability but also want a more compact and efficient vehicle for their daily life. However, many of our customers have asked us to help them determine which configuration and trim level of the 2020 Ford EcoSport was right for them, so we decided to put together this overview of the vehicle. If you have any questions about this relatively new Ford SUV or want to take an EcoSport for a test drive, please swing by the DePaula dealership and let us help you out.
To begin with, there are two basic configurations of the 2020 Ford EcoSport. When sold with front-wheel drive, the vehicle comes with a 1.0L Ford EcoBoost turbocharged engine. Although this configuration lacks some of the bad weather performance of the all-wheel drive Ford EcoSport, it is more fuel-efficient at 28 miles per gallon combined. However, if you prefer performance to fuel economy, upgrading to the all-wheel drive configuration will not only improve traction in bad weather, it will also give you a larger 2.0L engine with 166 horsepower. On top of being a welcome boost for daily driving, this extra power also increases the vehicle’s tow rating to 2,000 pounds should you be interested in pulling a light trailer.
The 2020 Ford EcoSport S is the base trim of Ford’s subcompact SUV and with a starting MSRP of just $19,995, it represents incredible value and is one of the lowest-cost ways of getting into a new SUV. But unlike the base trims of some competitors, which will often cut corners on mechanical features to save money, the EcoSport S is available with the same all-wheel drive system and larger engine found on the higher trims. In fact, from its standard four-wheel disc brakes to cruise control, you will find no mechanical compromises when comparing the EcoSport S to the higher trims of this little SUV.
However, in order to achieve the legendary performance expected of Ford SUVs while still maintaining its incredibly low price, Ford did have to offer the EcoSport S with a more limited set of luxury features. This is most obvious in the infotainment system, which has a small non-touch screen and lacks smartphone integration. Further, EcoSport S comes with single-zone manual air conditioning and heating instead of the automatic climate control found in all of the other trims of this SUV. However, it does still come with some features such as a 4G LTE wireless hotspot, one-touch power windows, and an optional remote start system so you will not be entirely without luxuries if you choose this trim.
While the EcoSport S is a solid option for drivers looking for an affordable no-nonsense SUV, most people will still probably be better served with one of the higher trims of the 2020 Ford EcoSport.
The 2020 EcoSport SE is the best all-around trim of Ford’s subcompact SUV and includes all the basic luxuries that the EcoSport S lacks. The better-equipped nature of the EcoSport SE can be readily seen from the exterior of the vehicle, with its silver grille and side mirrors with integrated turn signals. Other significant upgrades that are part of this trim include privacy glass for the side and rear windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter, and keyless entry with push-button start. But the largest physical item is the standard power moonroof, something that is generally only an option in this market segment.
Inside the EcoSport SE, you will find the standard Ford Sync 3 infotainment system as well as an 8” touch screen. This system includes full smartphone integration through both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as Amazon Alexa and SiriusXM satellite radio for maximum entertainment. And the infotainment system in the EcoSport SE can even be further upgraded with a seven-speaker sound system and built-in navigation with voice controls. On top of the improved infotainment technology, the 2020 EcoSport SE also receives Ford Co-Pilot360 safety technology in the form of a standard rear parking sensor and an optional blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert in order to make your driving experience safer and more convenient.
But if you want even more luxury in your SUV, than the 2020 Ford EcoSport Titanium is the trim for you. This version of the vehicle takes all of the features of the EcoSport SE, makes many optional features standard, and then adds additional items of its own. The most important of the now-standard features are the blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert.
Other convenient now-standard items from the EcoSport SE are a 110-volt power outlet for recharging larger electronic devices, and an ambient lighting system that allows you to customize the interior feel of your vehicle with a multitude of different colors. However, the real benefits of the EcoSport Titanium are its unique features. The manual driver’s seat is replaced with a power-adjustable seat, and both front seats are now heated and perforated to keep you comfortable no matter what the temperature is. Further, to keep your hands warm on cold days, the EcoSport Titanium also includes a standard heated steering wheel. And if you are an audiophile, then this trim is by far the best choice for you with its excellent ten-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system. Finally, smaller convenience upgrades include an auto-dimming rearview mirror to protect your eyes at night and rain-sensing windshield wipers to help keep your mind on the road when driving in bad conditions.
However, the top trim 2020 Ford EcoSport SES does not add additional luxury features. In fact, its interior is, in some ways, less well-equipped than that of the EcoSport Titanium, such as the simpler seven-speaker sound system found in the EcoSport SES. Instead, the EcoSport SES is the sport trim of this Ford SUV. The most obvious indication of this fact is that it is only available with all-wheel drive and the more powerful 2.0L engine. The exterior styling is also sharper, with a blacked-out grille and 17” wheels. And the looks can be made even sportier through the SES Black appearance package. This option adds a black roof, hood, and rear spoiler that truly makes your vehicle stand out from the crowd.
On the inside of the EcoSport SES, you will note a significant change, as the seats have been made from premium ActiveX synthetic materials for improved durability. However, the greatest difference between the EcoSport SES and the other trims of the Ford EcoSport is its unique sport-tuned suspension to give you tighter and more precise handling. If you enjoy driving and want to get the absolute most out of your vehicle, then the EcoSport SES is the trim for you.
