The battle of the brands continues between two of the automotive industry’s most popular automobile manufacturers, Ford and Chevrolet. Even after a century of battling against each other on the city streets, the open highways, and even deep in the woods with off-road competitions, Ford and Chevy still carry on their rivalry for the number one spot. The competition continues to get closer with each model year, and although both brands have a loyal following, with each upgraded design comes the newest styles, technologies, and features. There is no guarantee which way enthusiasts will sway. With the Ford Ranger’s enhancements for 2022, we’re excited to see how loyal the Colorado’s following truly is. We know what side we’re on, but we’ll let you decide for yourself with a look at the next battle of the brands: the 2022 Ford Ranger vs 2022 Chevy Colorado.

Both of these mid-size pickups have an impressive and competitive history regarding popularity. The Ford Ranger and the Chevy Colorado were introduced to the market as compact pickups. The Ranger arrived first in 1983, giving it additional time to win the hearts of America’s drivers, becoming the best-selling truck through 2004, which was also the year the Colorado was introduced. Although both models left the scene for a few years, by 2019, they were back in the lineup, battling for the number one spot. With minimal upgrades to the Colorado since its refresh for 2021, we have a suspicion that the 2022 Ford Ranger may entice more of Chevy’s loyal drivers to switch sides.

Do the Exteriors Reflect the Quality?

When you find yourself browsing the internet for your next truck, or walking through the lot of your local dealership, what catches your attention first with a vehicle is the exterior appearance. The style, design, and exterior paint are what will grab your attention and intrigue you to look closer and dive into the specifications to see if that model is a match for you and your driving requirements.

But what if you’re a die-hard Chevy fan, and the sophisticated and rugged look of the new 2022 Ford Ranger appeals to you more than the fun-looking trail rider, the 2022 Chevy Colorado? You take a closer look at how to customize the appearance of each and see which model is a better representation of you. To make things easier for you, we’ve gathered the information so you can look deeper into the customizable options of each truck to build the model to best portray who you are or want to be.

Which One Has the Appeal to Win You Over?

Upon first sight, the 2022 Chevy Colorado has a handsome, athletic, and playful appearance. It looks as though it is ready to hit the trail for some fun in the mud, especially with its two upper-level models, which focus their exteriors on off-road appearances and features. The 2022 Ford Ranger appears like a more versatile pickup, whether you’re playing in the mud, competing on the trails against the Colorado, or at work as a laborer or a white-collar employee. But with your choice of nine color options, three trim levels, and multiple performance and appearance packages to choose from, as much as your Ranger may look like it can blend in, there is plenty of flare that can be added to it for customization, especially with the orange Splash package with its black graphics and accents.

The Colorado may have an additional trim to choose from over the Ranger, the lowest WT model for a base-level working truck, but it only has six exterior colors to choose from if you go with one of the two lower-level models and an additional seventh color, the Sand Dune Metallic, for the Z71 and ZR2 top models. With fewer packages to add to your Colorado to customize its appearance and capabilities compared to the array of options available for the 2022 Ford Ranger, it's easy to say the Ranger is the way to go if you want a truck that you can customize to look and work the way you want and need it to.

Which Truck Can Actually Handle the Work You Need It to Do?

Drivers choose a pickup over other vehicles for more than just their rugged looks. When you are looking for a truck, you are looking for a vehicle that can be more than just a commuter or passenger vehicle; you want a powerhouse. You want a model that can handle any job and perform on any road. With the many trucks on the market today, the question is, how do you choose? A good place to start is the mid-size truck segment if you are looking for a pickup that is great for commuting and carrying passengers without sacrificing its ability to work.

    Breaking Down the Options

The Chevy Colorado offers more power options to choose from, with three engines available for its models. Its most powerful engine, the 2.8L Turbo-Diesel I-4, produces 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to tow a maximum of 7,700 pounds. This is only 200 pounds more than the Ford Ranger is capable of with its 2.3L Turbo I-4 engine that produces 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. For a proper engine comparison, the Colorado’s 4-cylinder gasoline engine option only produces 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque which is only capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds.

When it comes to hauling a load in the bed of the truck, not only will you have more room with both bed sizes of the Ranger, but you will also be able to haul more weight with a payload capacity of 1,905 pounds versus the maximum 1,550 pounds that the Colorado can haul with its V6 engine. So, unless you are looking to drive a diesel, you may find you can work the 2022 Ford Ranger a little more than you can the 2022 Chevy Colorado.

A diesel engine may get you farther between fill-ups than a gasoline engine, but in this comparison, not much farther. With an estimated range of 20 MPG city and 30 MPG highway with the Colorado, versus the gasoline engine of the Ranger, estimated to get 21 MPG city and 26 MPG highway, you won’t save much money on fuel costs or time spent at the gas station with the diesel. Based on the facts, sure, the 2022 Chevy Colorado may seem more worthy than the 2022 Ford Ranger, between its top trim levels and added off-road packages. Still, when you compare all of the capabilities of both models, the Ranger seems to be overall more powerful and enduring making it a better model to choose when you are looking for versatility.

  • Interior

Which One of These Trucks Has the Best Interior?

Previously, trucks were known for being work vehicles, powerful tools with endless possibilities, but they lacked interior comfort and design. Today, however, pickups have evolved into vehicles that can work hard, play hard, and be a primary commuter vehicle for the whole family. Trucks have grown in popularity amongst families due to their roomier cabins, comfortable materials, premium and intuitive designs, and the convenience of technology. The mid-size pickup segment continues to reign as a favorite for those who are looking for a versatile truck option that is the perfect size to carry passengers, haul material, tow, and easily maneuver around the city. So when you are comparing two notable models like this, you have to pay close attention to more than just their capabilities and their good looks.

Granted, neither the Ford Ranger nor the Chevy Colorado is designed to be luxurious, but that does not mean you cannot feel pampered with roomy, comfortable seating and premium amenities and features while you work or take to the woods on an adventure. Both truck models are available in two cab sizes, with the Colorado offering the most legroom in its largest Crew Cab that seats five, as well as its smaller Extended Cab variety. However, for the Ranger, both of its cab options, its five-passenger SuperCrew and four-passenger SuperCab, fall only inches short in legroom compared to the Colorado, but offer those additional inches in hip room, making it easier to fill the seats with passengers comfortably.

Your truck’s cabin space should also be equipped with the most advanced technologies and features to make driving more relaxing for you while also keeping you and your passengers entertained with any length of time on the road. From heated seating to climate control for comfort and smartphone connectivity with the availability of an in-vehicle WiFi hotspot and wireless charging features to keep you and your family connected anywhere you decide to go in your truck, the 2022 Ford Ranger and 2022 Chevy Colorado have you covered.

If your preferred form of entertainment in your truck is listening to your favorite artists, you’ll feel like you’re at the stadium in the Ford Ranger with the available premium B&O Sound System with ten speakers strategically placed throughout the cabin for all-around sound. Plus, with the sound system’s ability to monitor background noise to provide clarity with all of your music, you can easily tune out the world outside the truck or even the people inside the cabin. You don’t need to take our word for it, check out both the 2022 Ford Ranger and the 2022 Chevy Colorado for yourself to compare how their interiors work for you.
