  • Overview

Today, the market is absolutely awash with crossovers. Every automaker has a crossover in one form or another, and they all share that same curvy shape so as not to be confused with a standard boxy SUV. The Ford Edge, now in its second generation, sits comfortably between the Escape and Explorer in Ford's lineup, though in actuality, it really is a class in and of itself. Though never a flat-out bestseller for Ford, the Edge has more than held its own in a competitive field, offering style, substance, and speed. Yes, you read right. Ford has an ace up its sleeve when it comes to performance crossovers: the 2022 Ford Edge ST.

But what exactly is a crossover, and why do we need a fast one? The term crossover first entered automotive parlance in the mid-2000s. What was the idea behind a crossover? Well, it combined the utility and space of an SUV while managing to capture the handling and fuel economy of a sedan. Ford was one of the first automakers to throw its hat in the ring in 2007 with the Edge. Part SUV, part sedan, and all crossover, the Edge was a new and interesting vehicle that defied automotive norms. It wasn't a box; it was curvier. It had a mid-level ride height, excellent rear legroom and storage, and could handle morning commutes with ease.

Having a performance crossover allows consumers yet another option thought only open to sedans. With the ST, the Edge goes from being run-of-the-mill to special. A powerful engine, upgraded suspension, specialized interior, and performance braking system all combine to make a car that no one would expect to do what it does upon outward appearance. Intrigued? Good, because we're about to take you on a little journey through this specific trim level and show you what it's all about.

    Turbocharged Power

When it comes to any vehicle that's specifically tuned for speed, it is important to know not only what is under the hood but what speed numbers the car is actually achieving. Like its brethren, the Explorer ST, the Edge ST has a modified, turbocharged engine, along with eyebrow-raising horsepower that'll make you wonder just what's powering this seemingly mild crossover.

What's powering the Edge ST is a 2.7L V6 EcoBoost engine mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and producing an impressive 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. In a car that weighs slightly more than 4,500 lbs, 335 hp may not seem like enough to get it rolling at the speeds one would expect from an ST model. However, despite its own weight working against it, the Edge ST is surprisingly agile, especially considering the 2.7L V6 is the most powerful engine in the midsize crossover class. The top speed of the Edge ST is 133 mph, while the 0-60 mph time is around 5.7 seconds.

    Stiffer Suspension

The suspension system in the Edge ST has been upgraded from the original Edge. The thicker front and rear roll bars allow for less body lean when cornering. Part of the improved suspension is also the AdvanceTrac with roll stability control system. This is a premium electronically controlled stability system that maximizes grip on surfaces and hazardous road conditions like snow, ice, gravel, and rain. Including the torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, the Edge ST will stick to the ground at high speeds and allow for smoother acceleration thanks to the 7-speed automatic transmission sending power to all four tires.

    The ST Performance Brake Package

When it comes to performance, having a spunky engine isn't enough to make your vehicle work the way it should. You need top-of-the-line brakes to ensure your safety and the longevity of the car. That's why Ford offers the Edge ST with its own specialty ST Performance Brake Package.

The ST Performance Brake Package starts with the wheels. The ST is outfitted with 21" premium gloss black aluminum-alloy wheels with five angled spokes instead of the standard 20" wheels. All four corners are also upgraded with vented disk brakes. The front rotors are unique, and the Colorado Red painted brake calipers contain performance brake pads. There is a brushless radiator cooling fan to help keep the engine cool and vented brake shields to channel cold air over the brakes.

    Performance Tires

All of these factors wouldn't work without the summer-only set of Pirelli tires. Why summer only? Because summer-only tires are the most sports-tuned of all tires, meant to perform their best on dry tarmac like that you find at a race track. You can swap out the tires if need be, but the best performance you're going to get out of your engine and your brakes is with the standard, factory stock, summer-only tires. If the idea of racing around a track appeals to you, you'll understand the need for grippy tires with a low profile. Normal, everyday driving is not what the summer-only tires are all about. They're for racing, dynamic handling, and ensuring that you have one heck of a good time driving your ST.

    Sporty Styling

When it comes to the interior of a specialty trim, you want to feel like you're sitting in something that represents the sporty nature of your vehicle. Thankfully, Ford thought of these things when styling the interior of the 2022 Edge ST while also providing some subtle exterior sportiness as well.

    Specialty Interior

The Edge ST comes with all leather-trimmed seats with Miko inserts. ST logos are emblazoned into the headrests and seat body, and the seats are stitched together using City Silver colored thread. The rear captain's chairs are heated, with a ten-way power-adjustable driver's seat and a six-way power-adjustable passenger seat. The three-spoke steering wheel is leather-wrapped and contains secondary audio controls, as well as Bluetooth and cruise control functions. Ford performance badging can be found on the scuff plates of the front and rear doorways.

    Exterior Styling

On the exterior, the styling is a tad more subtle. The ST badge is pinned, in red, to the gloss black mesh grille. In the rear, the dual exhaust tips are trapezoidal and integrate seamlessly into the rear bumper. The front lights are your standard Edge shape but include signature daytime running lights on the ST trim. The BI-LED lighting means that when the lights are on, they combine the high and low beams to create one singular bright light beam that will light up a dark road like the tail of a shooting star.

    Premium Tech

Other tech accessories include the Ford SYNC 4A infotainment system with a massive 15.5" touch screen interface placed directly in the middle of the dashboard. SYNC 4A has advanced navigation and entertainment systems, integrating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Bluetooth and a 12-speaker Bang and Olufsen audio system. FordPass Connect with a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot connection is also standard.

  • Safety Features

    Standard Safety

Not that it is the most interesting feature of the ST, but Ford does include its standard set of safety features. These include a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), a Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), rearview camera, front, rear, curtain, and knee airbags, SOS post-crash alert system, LATCH tethers for children, rear child safety locks, and seat belt reminder. For extra safety, you can opt for the available Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package with Adaptive Cruise Control and more.

    Theft Protection

Also, if you're worried about theft, Ford has the following security features as standard on the Edge ST: remote keyless entry, SecuriCode keyless entry keypad, SecuriLock passive anti-theft system, and Ford MyKey. If that is not enough, there is the optional Perimeter Alarm that will alert you if someone is approaching your ST.
