When the Mustang Mach-E debuted for the 2021 model year, fans of the iconic pony car weren’t sure if an all-electric SUV was really worthy of carrying the Mustang name. For the 2024 model year, the Mach-E is getting a new version that takes its capability to a whole new level. The Mustang Mach-E Rally is designed to be quick and responsive both on the pavement and off. It’s making history as the first-ever EV to be inspired by rallying, a thrilling motorsport that often takes place in tough off-road conditions. Today, we’ll be exploring five reasons why we’re excited to see Ford take the Mustang nameplate in this bold new direction.

1. Electric Powertrain Packs a Punch

Ford has tuned a new version of the powertrain from the Mustang Mach-E GT in order to give the Rally the power it needs to deliver thrills. The Rally sports a two-motor layout that provides the traction necessary to tackle unpaved surfaces with confidence. Targeting at least 650 lb-ft of torque and 480 hp, Ford is working hard to provide Mach-E Rally drivers with the ability to accelerate quickly and power through when the road gets rough. And with electric motors, torque is available almost instantly instead of only at high RPM. That means you can get more power at lower speeds compared to gas-powered vehicles, which comes in handy when you’re navigating a gravel road with lots of twists and turns.

The motors are powered by a 91 kWh battery that delivers a targeted EPA-estimated range of 250 miles, so you can travel far without worrying about stopping for a charge. When you do power up in public, you can go from 10% to 80% in under 40 minutes with a DC Fast Charger. Of course, the powertrain is also emission-free, so you can explore rural areas and even state parks without worrying about bringing a carload of smog into the pristine air of the wilderness.

2. Added Equipment Delivers Action

The Mach-E Rally is designed to handle both high-speed driving on paved roads and excursions that take you off the pavement. That’s a tall order, but the Rally has plenty of specialized equipment to help it handle both tasks with aplomb. Compared to the Mustang Mach-E GT, it has a suspension with an extra 20 mm of lift, helping you avoid on-road obstacles like rocks and tree roots more easily.

Uneven ground can make for a bumpy and uncomfortable ride in the wrong car, but the Mach-E Rally has specialty tuned springs and MagneRide shocks on board to make every drive nice and smooth. When driving at high speeds, it’s important to be able to slow down or come to a stop quickly, which is why the Rally features front brake rotors with Brembo calipers that can help you stop on a dime. A set of 19-inch rally-style alloy wheels come standard and wrapped around them, you’ll find Michelin CrossClimate2 tires that give you more sidewall and a looser surface grip than what you’ll find on the GT.

3. There Are Plenty of Features to Help Keep You and Your Vehicle Safe

If you’re going to be leaving the pavement behind in your Mach-E Rally, then you should be prepared to handle a unique set of risks. While the Rally is built to be ready for action, even the toughest off-road vehicle can get stuck sometimes. That’s why Ford has built a recovery point into the front end of the vehicle. A body-colored cover keeps it tucked away and out of sight during everyday driving, but when you need a little help, you can access it and use the included hook to get pulled back onto more solid ground.

Driving on loose surfaces like gravel roads can also wreak havoc on vital components that are located on your vehicle’s underside. This is a big reason why you don’t want to drive just any car into a rural country backroad where you never know when the pavement is going to suddenly come to an end. But with the Mach-E Rally, you’ll have protective shielding that protects the front and rear motors from anything you might kick up during your adventures. You don’t have to worry too much about cosmetic damage either since the door cladding and fenders have a protective film designed to prevent paint from chipping, and styled mud flaps keep debris buildup to a minimum.

4. Unique Style Turns Heads

The Mustang Mach-E Rally comes standard with two racing stripes on the front. These provide an eye-catching contrast to the EV’s exterior paint color and let the world know that you’re driving a capable vehicle that can deliver big thrills at top speed. Speaking of the exterior paint color, the Rally is available in several colors, so you can pick one that matches your personal sense of style. Other contrasting accents include body moldings, a front splitter, and a black-painted steel roof, all of which work together to give the Mach-E Rally a cohesive look. The fascia on the front end fits in with these accents, sports the Mustang logo, and houses the fog lights, which give you the illumination you need to cut through bad weather on dark nights. In the back, a rear spoiler inspired by the iconic Focus RS delivers both improved aerodynamics and an athletic appearance.

A linear throttle response gives you extra control so you can drive with confidence, more aggressive damping helps you handle loose corners with improved precision, and added yaw allows for bigger slides.

You can also activate 1-pedal drive to control your speed exclusively with the accelerator pedal. This can make for an easier time dealing with stop-and-go traffic or unpredictable backroads with lots of obstacles that require you to slow down. EVs are notoriously silent operators, which can come in handy when you’re driving through a rural area and don’t want to disturb wildlife or your fellow campers.
