What Peak Performance Looks Like in 2020
As 2019 draws to a close, we can all say this was a great year for high-performance Ford vehicles, but 2020 looks to be even better. You might suggest that since we’re a Ford dealership, we have a proverbial horse in the race – and while that’s true, we’re more than happy to back up our words with concrete examples. What kind of examples, you ask – well, the kind that tears up the road and changes everything you know about performance vehicles.
So let’s take a look at what peak performance will be like in the model year 2020 and see what the Ford engineers and designers have been up to. Not only will we look at some production vehicles coming to your Ford dealership, like the upcoming Mustang Shelby GT500 and 2020 Ford F-150 Raptor, but we will also check in with the folks at Roush Performance to see what they are cooking up. Spoiler alert: it’s an F-150 that can go from 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds – no seriously, keep reading to learn more about the F-150 Nitemare (though we think it’s a dream come true).
The Standard 2020 Ford Mustang
First off, let’s consider the kind of performance vehicles you’re going to find here at your Ford dealership. It all starts with the standard 2020 Ford Mustang, the modern version of the original pony car that continues to live up to the legacy it started more than 50 years ago. The 2020 Mustang has a 12-inch fully configurable LCD digital cluster for the driver and a range of additional tech features that make it an absolute thrill to drive.
We’re talking about performance here, so let’s look at the engine and the kind of power it can provide for the 2020 Mustang. The standard model comes with a 2.3L EcoBoost engine that produces up to 310 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, with an available High Performance Package for the engine that pushes it up to 330 hp. That’s not bad by any means, but there’s still room to improve.
If you go with the GT trim level, then you’ll find a 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine that puts out up to 460 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque for truly impressive performance. Finally, on the standard Mustang, you can choose the limited Bullitt trim that adds a high-performance air intake to the 5.0L V8 engine to crank that performance up to 480 hp. Driving this beauty is an exhilarating experience that will put you back in your seat and keep you coming back for more.
The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350
Of course, if you really want a high-performance Mustang, then you should be looking at the incredible Shelby models that are available in 2020. These are the ones that go from “performance” to “high-performance” and start pushing the envelope regarding what the Mustang is capable of doing. It starts with the Mustang Shelby GT350, which you can find at your Ford dealership, but it can also be a special order model.
The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 features a 5.2L NA Ti-VCT V8 engine that can produce up to 526 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. The GT350 has an independent rear suspension and a TREMEC 6-speed manual transmission for a smooth and joyful ride that keeps you constantly in control. RECARO sport seats complete the look and feel of the GT350 and remind you that even though you’re on city streets, you’re driving something with the heart of a race car.
The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
If you’re still not satisfied with the kind of high performance that the GT350 offers, then consider the incredible power and handling of the GT500. The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 really is the next level of performance for a Mustang and something you should consider if you’re interested in taking your car to the track. It includes selectable drive modes, which include options for track and drag strip driving, as well as a Launch Control system designed for track use only, which helps ensure a quick start off the line.
The Shelby GT500 features a 5.2L Supercharged V8 engine that provides up to 760 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque. It comes paired with a TREMEC 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission that ensures you get off the line quickly and fly through the gears in a short period of time. All of this power lets the GT500 go from 0 to 100 and back down to 0 in just 10.6 seconds, which blows away the vast majority of sports cars out there. This isn’t the kind of coupe you’re likely to find at a Ford dealership, but if it meets your needs, then come in and talk with a salesperson to order one.
The 2020 Ford F-150 Raptor
While it’s easy to think about only Mustangs when looking at performance vehicles from Ford, it’s important to remember that they have more than that to offer. The F-Series of pickups from Ford has been the best selling vehicles in America for decades, and all that pedigree comes with a lot of promises to keep. One way that Ford does that is with the F-150 Raptor, a truck designed to work hard and go fast. How fast? Well…
The 2020 Ford F-150 Raptor has a wider stance than the standard model, giving it better control and stability, paired with a Twin Turbo V6 engine that offers up to 450 hp with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This lets the F-150 Raptor go from 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds, which is amazing for a full-size pickup truck. The suspension on the F-150 Raptor is ideal for going off-road, so whether you want to zip past coupes on the highway or open it up on the trail, this is a fantastic machine to get it done.
Rumors have been circulating for a while now that there will also be a special edition of the F-150 Raptor available at some point in 2020 or 2021. If true, the special edition, dubbed by some as the “Super Raptor,” would feature the supercharged V8 engine found in the Mustang Shelby GT500. At this time, we cannot confirm that this will really be coming to a Ford dealership near you in the next year or two, but if it happens, trust us on this: you’ll be the first to know!
ROUSH Performance in 2020
Finally, let’s take a step away from what you can find at any Ford dealership and see what ROUSH performance has been cooking up lately. This is a high-performance after-market company that takes the impressive cars and trucks made by Ford and builds onto them to take them to the next level. For example, the Stage 3 Mustang that ROUSH Performance offers features the 5.0L V8 engine from Ford, supercharged to produce up to 710 hp and 610 lb-ft of torque. Comparing that to the standard 5.0L engine in the GT trim, you can see they add up to 150 hp and nearly 200 lb-ft of torque.
Beyond that, however, ROUSH Performance can take the legendary F-150 Raptor and go even further with it. For example, the 2019 Ford F-150 Raptor Nitemare features a 5.0L V8 engine that has been supercharged to produce up to 650 hp, allowing it to go from 0 to 60 in less than four seconds. While that kind of performance doesn’t come cheap and isn’t something you’ll find at every Ford dealership, it’s certain to turn heads and leave everyone else behind.
