We all have different needs when it comes to driving, but for drivers of pickup trucks, those needs can be very specific. You need to haul a trailer. You need to carry lots of tools. You need to drive long distances and feel safe about doing so. Whether your truck is for work only, your daily driver, or your road trip companion, you need a truck that's going to be with you every mile of the way.
The 2022 Ford F-150 comes with a wide selection of engines that turn the F-150 into the performance vehicle you need. Each engine is a winner. The standard option on many trims, the 3.3L V6 may seem basic, but it's been carefully engineered to be equally powerful and efficient. The 2.7L EcoBoost V6, made of compacted graphite iron and engineered with Ford's port and direction injection system, is good for 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque can tow up to 14,000 pounds. Finally, V8 fans know Ford's 5.0L engine and its 3,325-pound payload capacity.
While there is not a diesel option among the 2022 Ford engine offerings, the available 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6, with its incredibly impressive 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque, provides exceptional torque and fuel economy. There's also the F-150 Raptor's unique 3.5L High-Output EcoBoost engine, offering 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft torque.
But what about the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500? What type of power and performance options does it have to offer? The standard engine for many trims is the 2.7 Turbo high-output engine, providing 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The 5.3L Ecotec V8 and the 6.2L V8 are standard or available on nearly the entire lineup. The 5.3L version offers 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.2L takes things to an entirely different level with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Unlike Ford, Chevy does offer a diesel option. Continuing its long-running tradition with Duramax, the 3.0L turbo-diesel engine available on the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 provides 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque for towing excellence, handling loads up to 13,300 pounds. However, Chevy lacks any sort of hybrid or high-performance engine options to compete with the Ford PowerBoost or Raptor engines.
Trucks aren't as civilized as sedans, in some respects. Trucks need to work––and also like to play––in the mud, gravel, and snow. Therefore, truck manufacturers cater to their drivers' needs by offering options that keep going when the pavement ends.
Ford offers two off-road-ready options for the F-150 in 2022: the Tremor and the Raptor. The Tremor rises higher and stands wider than the standard F-150, riding on 33-inch all-terrain tires. Equipped with Trail One-Pedal Drive, Trail Control, and Trail Turn Assist, this truck is ready to take on what nature throws at it.
Then there's the Raptor. Baja-tested and driver approved, the Raptor is decked out in all the right stuff to go wherever you want. The largest-ever FOX shocks on a Raptor, with active damping and internal bypass technology, plus available 37-inch all-terrain tires, are just the start to leaving the civilized world behind.
Chevrolet has also created an off-road capable truck in the Silverado 1500 ZR2. This trim includes the 6.2L V8 engine as standard equipment, along with Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers and an enhanced two-speed transfer case. Riding high on 33-inch all-terrain tires, the ZR2 has increased the Silverado's approach angle to 31 degrees, but this new truck simply lacks the raw power or imposing presence of the iconic Ford Raptor.
The 2022 Ford F-150 is offered in eight trims, while the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is offered in nine variations. To list all of the features, options, and packages would require a full encyclopedia volume. However, there are plenty of comfort and convenience features that are fantastic enough to warrant mention.
Ford has provided drivers with everything from the modest base XL trim to the luxurious Limited trim. All models include a highly capable touchscreen infotainment system with a screen that can reach up to 12 inches, featuring integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Ford Co-Pilot 360 suite of safety and driver assistance features is also available on every model, including automatic headlights, lane keep assistance, and automatic emergency braking at every level.
Stepping up through the trims adds additional safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring and automatic braking when in reverse. However, the ultimate tech feature is Ford's new BlueCruise technology. This advanced self-driving system gives drivers hands-free capability on over 130,000 miles of pre-mapped roadways.
The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is not without its own charm, with models ranging from the basic to the luxurious. The center control screen measures up to 13.4 inches, and the digital gauge cluster measures a massive 12.3 inches. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also on board. However, the standard system in the lower trims only offers a 7-inch screen and lacks anything comparable to Ford's SYNC 4 technology.
Given previous customer concerns about the dated interior of the Silverado, Chevy has updated the entire cab for 2022. New materials, new seats, and a new electronic shift lever all add to the overall ambiance of the higher trims. The top High Country trim even includes open-pore wood accents and stainless steel speakers, finally putting it in the same league as the F-150 King Ranch and higher trims.
On the safety side, forward collision alert with automatic braking and pedestrian detection come as standard features across the lineup, along with lane keep assist, automatic high beams, and a following distance indicator. Unfortunately, SuperCruise, Chevy's own hands-free driving technology, is only available on the most expensive High Country trim, while BlueCruise is offered on six different trims of the 2022 Ford F-150.
