Finding the right vehicle with everything you need can feel like a daunting task, particularly since you have so many different options available to you these days. Trying to look at every make and model while keeping so many specs and details in mind is nearly impossible—this is why we find it helps to keep things simple and focus on just one or two at a time. If we compare the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs 2024 Volkswagen ID.4, for example, it is much easier to consider all the details for these two vehicles and see how they compare. This is a fair comparison since they are both compact SUVs and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) with many similar options.

Once we start looking at the specifics of these two vehicles, however, we can see that despite their immediate similarities, there are some important differences between them. For example, both of these vehicles let you choose between two different battery systems with different amounts of power and range, plus you can get either a single motor or a dual-motor setup. And yet, the standard battery with a single motor for the Ford Mustang Mach-E delivers 264 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque, while the starting option for the Volkswagen ID.4 offers just 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque. Looking at their top-end options, we see a similar discrepancy: while Volkswagen has worked hard to improve the ID. 4's power system for 2024, it tops out at about 335 hp compared to the 480 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque you can get from Ford.

These differences in power design and engineering extend through things like total range and ease of charging. The 2024 Mustang Mach-E, with its extended-range battery, can go up to 320 miles from a full charge; by comparison, even with improved engineering for this year's model, the VW ID.4 still tops out at just 291 miles of range from a full charge when configured for optimal driving distance. These kinds of differences extend to other areas as well, such as the Mustang Mach-E coming with a standard 15.5-inch infotainment display, compared to the 12.9-inch screen available in the ID.4. Ultimately, while Volkswagen's BEV has plenty of fine features it simply falls short of the incredible power, performance, and technology that Ford delivers with the Mustang Mach-E.

  • Performance

With a conventional compact SUV, it is easy to overlook performance because you will usually find an engine designed to put out just enough power for such a small vehicle. But with a BEV model, you expect a lot more—both Ford and Volkswagen clearly understand this with impressive power packed into these two vehicles, but there is no denying that Ford comes out on top. Both of these models have standard and more powerful battery systems available, along with a single-motor and dual-motor configuration, giving you options for the kind of performance you seek.

The ID. 4's Battery and Motor Options

With the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4, you only have three total options available because the standard battery is not offered with two motors; it is only a single-motor setup. The standard 62 kWh battery for the ID.4 with its single motor delivers 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque, which is good for a compact SUV like this. Moving up to the more powerful 82 kWh battery, with a pair of motors, it delivers 335 hp. There is no denying that there is a good amount of power for a vehicle like this, but we know Ford can do even better.

The Mustang Mach-E Offers More Power

For starters, Ford gives you more configurations to choose from, including both single-motor and dual-motor setups for both of their available battery packs. The standard 72 kWh battery with a single motor delivers 264 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque, which is more powerful than Volkswagen's standard setup. From there, you can get far better performance with the Mustang Mach-E, including a 91 kWh battery with a pair of motors that deliver 365 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. If you really want exceptional power, however, the Mustang Mach-E GT model has 480 hp and up to 700 lb-ft of torque that lets it go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds, far surpassing anything that Volkswagen offers.

  • Range and Charging

A red 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E and a white 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E are shown parked at a charging station.

One of the most important things with any BEV is how easy it is to enjoy—you want a powerful vehicle, but it also needs to fit your lifestyle. That often comes down to getting great range from your vehicle so it can take you everywhere you need to go. Your BEV also needs to be easy to charge so that it works well for you without you needing to think too much about it. Both of these models have good range and support all three levels of charging, but the Ford Mustang Mach-E can go further and gives you more freedom in how you charge it.

    ID.4 Range

The range you get from your BEV depends largely on the battery pack; both models have two different batteries available that offer different types of range. Looking at the Volkswagen ID.4, it starts with a 62 kWh battery that can offer up to 209 miles of range from a full charge. That is decent, if not remarkable, while its available 82 kWh battery can increase that to up to 291 miles from a full charge when properly configured. This is a step up over last year for the ID.4, and it is nice to see Volkswagen working to improve a model that some drivers have found a bit underwhelming.

    Mustang Mach-E Range

With the Ford Mustang Mach-E, you also have two batteries to choose from, and they are both better than VW's comparable offerings. The Mustang Mach-E comes with a standard 72 kWh battery that offers an estimated 250 miles of range when properly equipped. If you go for the enhanced 91 kWh battery and a configuration that focuses on maximum driving distance, then you get an estimated 320 miles of range from a full charge. That is quite a bit better than what the ID.4 can do. Plus, the Mustang Mach-E can take advantage of Ford's partnership with Tesla and utilize the network of Tesla Superchargers, in addition to the Blue Oval charging network, to give you a massive number of options for public charging.

  • Technology

    ID.4 Infotainment Tech

The modern auto industry is all about impressive technology—not only in terms of power and performance but also the kinds of features you get with your vehicle. Volkswagen clearly gets this with fun little things like their ID.Light, which uses a light bar to provide alerts and information while driving. This is paired with a 12-inch infotainment display, which is quite large for what you can find throughout the auto industry, plus wireless support for streaming apps and more. There is even a 12.9-inch infotainment display offered for the 2024 model, which is nice but not as impressive an upgrade as you would expect.

    Mustang Mach-E Infotainment Tech

Ford also understands the importance of innovative technology in their vehicles, which is abundantly clear with the Mustang Mach-E. For starters, we have an absolutely massive 15.5-inch infotainment screen up front in this vehicle, which dwarfs even the available display in the Volkswagen ID.4. This stunning screen is standard in every model, which makes it easy to take advantage of the great apps and software Ford offers. There is also an available B&O sound system that elevates your driving experience even further, plus plenty of other great features.

    The Mustang Mach-E's BlueCruise Tech

One of our favorite things about the Mustang Mach-E is that it has Ford's remarkable new BlueCruise technology available. Ford BlueCruise gives you true, hands-free highway driving that is compatible with 97% of controlled-access highways across the US and Canada. This takes some of the stress and hassle off your daily commute or long road trips, so you can focus on getting the most from your ride. Combine that with things like an available panoramic fixed glass roof, and you have a vehicle that you will look forward to driving each and every day.
