Although not everyone is ready to step into the all-electric future of the auto industry, there is no denying that car companies have started making exciting battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) that we cannot wait to drive. This means the battle between these models from different manufacturers is starting to heat up—that is a win for us since it means we get to enjoy better and better BEVs year after year. Things are changing and advancing so fast that it can be hard to keep track of it all, which is why it often helps to occasionally stop and take a look at what is out there. Comparing two models, like the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs 2024 Chevy Equinox EV, is a great way to do this since you get to see what two BEVs offer rather than just one.
Looking at these two models, one thing is clear: both Ford and Chevy are fully committed to making exciting BEVs that are fun to drive. With the Ford Mustang Mach-E, you get numerous configurations to choose from between two different battery packs and either a single-motor or dual-motor setup, letting you choose the kind of range and power that best meets your needs. Chevy has delivered some similar options with the Equinox EV, but it lacks quite as many choices for you since you can only get a dual-motor configuration with the larger battery that is available. Furthermore, Ford comes out on top with incredible performance thanks to its Mustang Mach-E GT that delivers 480 hp, while the Equinox EV tops out at 288 hp.
In terms of overall driving experience, the Mustang Mach-E has already proven itself and earned a huge number of fans. On the other hand, the Chevy Equinox EV is untested, and we will have to see how it does as it hits the road for its first model year. What we can see, however, is that Ford is already improving on what the Mach-E can do with things like the all-new Mustang Mach-E Rally edition this year that offers enhanced off-road performance and design. When you combine this with the terrific features of the Mustang Mach-E, including more cargo space inside than the Equinox EV and innovative tech, it is clear that Ford has the lead.
BEVs might not have gas-powered engines like conventional vehicles, but the performance they can deliver still matters a great deal. Ultimately, your driving experience comes down—in large part—to the battery system and motor, or motors, found in a BEV like the Ford Mustang Mach-E or Chevy Equinox EV. This is something Ford clearly understands, and while there were some initial concerns about them making a new BEV using the Mustang name, the Mach-E has more than lived up to the legacy that it is a part of. While Chevy has given the Equinox EV some decent power systems, it simply cannot keep up with what Ford offers on their similarly all-electric compact SUV.
Ford has two battery systems available, a Standard Range and Extended Range option, plus you can choose between either a single-motor or dual-motor setup for both of these battery packs. Going with the starting battery and single motor gets you 264 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque, which is a great standard power system. Choosing a dual-motor configuration with the Extended Range battery can get you 365 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque; if you want truly exceptional power, then you need to check out the Mustang Mach-E GT model. When properly configured, the GT gets 480 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque—this is incredible power, and it lets this compact SUV go from 0 to 60 mph in a heart-racing 3.3 seconds.
By comparison, the Chevy Equinox EV also has two different battery systems: a standard one and an available option for enhanced performance and range. You can also choose between either a single-motor setup or a dual-motor option, but unfortunately, the dual-motor is only available with the larger battery. That is not necessarily a disaster, but it does limit your options in ways that Ford does not. When configured for optimal power, the Equinox EV comes to life with 288 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque, which is pretty good but not exactly mind-blowing. Ultimately, this is a solid performance and better than some other BEV compact SUVs out there, but it falls short of what you can do behind the wheel of the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
As BEVs start proving themselves with impressive range, bold performance, and easy charging, the next big step is showing how they can leave the road behind and help you conquer the wilderness. We are starting to see car companies experiment with this, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E is the perfect example of how they are taking their first steps into this new area. While you will still get the most out of something like the Ford Bronco or Bronco Sport if you are looking to hit the trail, the capabilities of the Mustang Mach-E are quite impressive and ready to take you further than you might expect.
Much of this capability comes down to the new Rally edition for the Mustang Mach-E, which is a first for the 2024 model year. This Rally edition adds a few key things to the Mustang Mach-E that give it greater off-road potential, though there is plenty here to enjoy when getting around town, too. For starters, the Rally model gets 480 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque, giving it incredible power for taking on the trail, with dual motors for electric all-wheel drive (eAWD), of course. The Rally edition also has MagneRide specially-tuned off-road suspension, including a nearly one-inch lift and a RallySport drive mode built for tackling the trail. Ford has even given the Rally model extra underbody protection for the motors to ensure you can head off-road without damaging your vehicle.
By comparison, the Chevy Equinox EV does not have much to offer if you are interested in taking your BEV off-road. The highest trim levels for the Equinox EV (the 3LT and 3RS) have 21-inch wheels, which are nice for hitting the trail, along with roof rails that you can load up with camping supplies and heated outside mirrors that keep clear when it is cold outside. Beyond these features, however, you will not find much to elevate the Equinox EV when it leaves the city behind, let alone a trim dedicated to it. With any luck, we will see something like the Rally edition from Chevy in the next few years, but for now, it cannot hope to compete with what Ford brings to the trail.
Both of these vehicles are on the cutting edge of what the auto industry is bringing to the road, which means they have impressive technology inside—Ford simply gets the edge in some key ways. For one thing, though these are both compact SUVs, the Mustang Mach-E gives you more space inside with nearly 15 cu.ft. of rear cargo area and up to 59.7 cu.ft. of total cargo space inside behind the front seats. By comparison, the Chevy Equinox EV has just over 57 cu.ft. of total cargo volume inside—that might seem like a minor difference, but it adds up when it comes to ease of use. Add in the extra 4.7 cu.ft. of space you get with the frunk on the Mustang Mach-E, which is washable, features a drain, and has fantastic functionality.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E also comes with impressive technology for you to take advantage of, though the Chevy Equinox EV is no slouch in this area. You get a 15.5-inch infotainment display inside the Mustang Mach-E that looks gorgeous, plus available options like a panoramic fixed-glass roof and a Bang & Olufsen sound system for an incredible driving experience. The Chevy Equinox EV also has an impressive infotainment display, with available options that elevate the drive. Ultimately, both of these models have a lot to offer; it simply comes down to what you are looking for and need from your ride.
There is no denying that Chevy is off to a strong start with the first year for its Equinox EV, but the proven track record of the Ford Mustang Mach-E gives it the advantage. Particularly since it delivers more power that translates into boosted acceleration and overall performance, when you look at extras like the new Rally edition, Ford is on an incredible roll.
